Position Summary:

Are you a dynamic, multi-talented professional who is adept at storytelling, using written and visual expression, and interfacing with key audiences across a range of platforms? The Faculty Development and Instructional Support team is recruiting a Communications Specialist who will work closely with the unit on the design, development, and implementation of messaging for specific and general audiences to advance evidence-based practices in teaching, learning, and faculty career development. The messages you create will support students and advance belonging at UAA. This role is on-site on the Anchorage campus, with up to 40% remote work and some schedule flexibility as negotiated within the unit administrative team.

Duties:

1-40Content Creation • Development of communications in an accurate, consistent, and clear manner. In accordance with institutional missions, values, and initiatives, the Communications Specialist (CS) will prepare messages for delivery at institutional and audience-specific levels via a range of platforms. CS will produce routine and project-specific content that contributes to the unit’s goals and initiatives, which includes projects interfacing with the faculty community, the Office of Academic Affairs, and colleagues from other units. • Target communications for our faculty audience, implementing best practices from the field of faculty development and developing materials that reflect our role in higher education, the diverse communities within UAA, and Alaska’s specific context. • In collaboration with other team members, CS will create and maintain materials that promote the unit’s faculty support efforts, marketing of events, and communication of projects. CS will create or support creation and strategic distribution of accessible materials across a range of platforms (newsletters, websites, slide decks for presentations, blog-type posts, social media accounts, institutional listservs, etc.) in a manner that reaches target audiences. CS may contribute to unit involvement in special events with responsibilities such as designing graphic designs for marketing and event materials, portable displays, preparing event booths or tables, and post-event debriefing. • Working in a manner that aligns with unit and UAA brand identity, editorial, and marketing standards, CS will use photos and graphic design to reinforce communication messages. This includes finding open license content, maintaining a photo library and design management system that tracks image permissions, interfacing with UAA Advancement, occasionally photographing unit events, and using photo editing software to adapt image files to their intended purpose.Essential
2-35Website, Social Media, and Platform Interface • CS will work with unit staff to design and maintain various websites. CS will track and review unit websites, updating pages and refreshing content as needed and in a timely manner. CS will manage web content in accordance with unit and UAA brand identity, editorial, and marketing standards, as well as accessibility expectations and requirements. • CS will maintain the unit’s social media content and presence, distributing professional, informative, and created in a manner that maintains unit and institutional standards and branding. • CS will track analytics from websites, social media, and other platforms on a regularly scheduled basis. As with other communications, items shared will be designed to improve delivery of messaging, content, and programming in alignment with institutional goals. CS will engage in record keeping, information gathering, and analysis that will contribute to reports, modifications in efforts, and alignment of resources. CS will maintain confidentiality in alignment with ethical guidelines for the faculty development profession. • CS will represent the unit in conversations involving website professionals.Essential
3-20Unit Support & Collaboration: • CS should be dedicated to excellence in team efforts and shared success. CS will help coordinate and track communication-related projects and collaborate both within our unit and with other units across the institution. • CS will work with others in the unit to develop and implement an overarching communications strategy. • CS will serve as an expert on platforms, strategies, messaging priorities, and the use of communication analytics. • As a member of our administrative team, CS will contribute to our community interface and support by responding to phone calls and email messages at designated times. This role is covered in a collaborative manner in our unit and scheduling will be worked out with other members of the administrative team and unit leadership.Essential
5Professional Development • Via individual efforts, CS should remain informed on best practices in professional communications, as well as new trends and best practices in messaging in professional contexts, particularly those in a higher education setting focused on teaching and learning. Participate in departmental, institutional, and external training on relevant topics.Essential

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: • Excellent verbal/written communication skills with the ability to write well for an educated audience.
• Web authoring and social media communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal communication and the ability to work effectively in a team setting.
• Awareness of the higher educational context and Alaska’s communities.
• Able to identify and resolve problems in a clear, effective way.
• Ability to follow professional and ethical practices and to communicate them to team members.
• Ability to use graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Cloud or Canva Pro.
• Ability to use and manage newsletter and marketing software (e.g., Salesforce, Constant Contact).
• Ability to learn new communication platforms and applications with minimal time investment.
• Must be self-motivated, project-completion focused, able to work effectively with remote supervision, and willing to adapt to emerging needs.
• Commitment to producing and helping others produce materials that fulfill accessibility requirements.
• Interest in assisting faculty in their professional development and educational mission.

Preferred Experience & Education:
Preferred: 3 years relevant experience in professional writing, marketing, graphic design, public relations, journalism, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.
Required Experience & Education:

CS 3 required: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Advanced students near degree completion are encouraged to apply; in some cases, internships and student employment can count towards relevant experience.

CS 4 required: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

CS 4 preferred: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 4-5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 78, based on education and experience.
