Position Summary:

Do you enjoy the Alaskan outdoors and take pride in maintaining clean, safe and beautiful public spaces for the community to enjoy? Join the UAA Grounds crew this season and expand your equipment operator and horticulture skill sets. This is a seasonal, full-time position based on the UAA campus with an anticipated mid-April to early-May start date (start dates are flexible). Positions last approximately six months from time of hire.

Duties:

General Duties: Assist grounds department staff with landscape maintenance, mowing & trimming, raking, sod repair, pruning, planting, fertilizing, irrigation of trees and shrubs, weed control, planting and care of annual and perennial flowers and other duties necessary to keep a clean, safe and attractive campus.Utilize many types of hand and power tools such as rakes, shovels, lawn mowers, string trimmers, and manual irrigation sprinklers. Operate vehicles and equipment such as pick-up trucks and tractors. Assist grounds staff with interior plant maintenance including, but not limited to, cleaning and transplanting of interior foliage plants. Other responsibilities include sweeping, trash and litter pickup, watering plant material and other landscaping maintenance duties as assigned. Assist grounds department staff with general duties including, but not limited to, event support, hardscape and signage repair and minor maintenance of tools and equipment. Required to work outside in all types of weather. Must provide your own protective clothing; i.e., rain gear, appropriate footwear. Additional personal protective equipment will be provided.Essential
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

General Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Experience with and a willingness to learn and perform new landscape maintenance and installation tasks, including installation and maintenance of trees, shrubs, annual and perennial flower beds, and lawns. Experience operating landscape equipment (mowers, Toolcats, tractors, skid steers, small tanker trucks) and using hand tools preferred.

Must possess good communication skills; the ability to understand and follow directions and provide feedback to supervisor; the ability to perform strenuous labor over long periods of time. Must promote a culture of safety. Must be available to work a regular 8-hour shift between the department hours, 7:00am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. Must be dependable, cooperative and able to work independently as well as with co-workers of varying backgrounds. Valid driver’s license and current DMV driving record meeting EHS safe driver criteria will be required for consideration (to be verified by UAA).

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to students, staff, and other employees of the organization.

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY: Ability to use a computer for timesheet recording, e-mail and virtual meetings.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Preferred Experience:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Education or Training:

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: A valid AK Driver’s License and a DMV driving record meeting EHS safe driver criteria is required for the position:
1. Possess a current, valid driver's license (probationary, court restricted, international drivers’ license, or a drivers’ permit are NOT acceptable);
2. Have at least three (3) years driving experience as a licensed driver;
3. Be in compliance with the State of Alaska’s DMV licensing and insurance requirements;
4. Attend and successfully complete a campus approved drivers’ safety course;
5. Have not been convicted within the last three years for:
Two or more moving violations.
Two or more at fault accidents.
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
A pattern of moving violations or reckless driving behavior which is demonstrated by the accumulation of more than five points against their drivers’ license.

Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 6-month, Temp Local 6070 position. New hires will be placed on the MSW3 /Step 1 $18.53/hr. (See Article 9.2 in the L6070 Collective Bargaining Agreement, Wage Grade Schedule - http://www.alaska.edu/labor/local-6070/ ).
