Position Summary:

Resident Assistants (RAs) are an integral part of the Campus Life Community environment, serving as paraprofessional members of the Residence Life staff. Each RA is personally responsible for 10-20 residents in an assigned living area. These paraprofessional staff members are charged with creating an open, inviting, inclusive and safe living environment for residents - one that is conducive to student learning as well as social development and community engagement.

Duties:

15Administrative Responsibilities: Attend regularly scheduled one-on-one meetings with supervisor, staff meetings, training and development sessions, planning meetings and any other meetings scheduled by the department. Respond to emails and requests in a timely manner. Submit accurate time sheets by the advertised deadline. Perform health and safety inspections. Assist with move-in and move-out periods.Essential
20Community Building: Intentionally engage residents both one-on-one and in group settings in an effort to create meaningful connections with the RA and other members of the community. Create a sense of belonging in each resident both to the residential community and PWSC. Utilize hall decorations and bulletin boards as a way to create a homelike atmosphere in the residence halls and to take advantage of the opportunity to passively educate residents on relevant topics. Facilitate discussions among roommates on issues known to contribute to conflicts, and mediate conflicts as they arise relying on the agreements reached at the beginning of the semester. Be visible in the community and available to residents a reasonable amount of time.Essential
20Policy Enforcement/On-Call Duty Rotation: Serve in an on-call duty rotation providing staff support for crisis situations, facility issues and to ensure policies are being enforced in the residential community. Educate residents on the Student Code of Conduct, the Alcohol Policy, the Community Living Standards and other relevant policies including their rationale. Accurately and consistently report policy violations and incidents using the appropriate method. Write timely, thorough and professional incident reports. Enforce policy at all times even when not on-call. Serve as a role model for residents at all times.Essential
20Programming/Event Planning: Plan, organize, facilitate and evaluate programs in areas known to be important in the development of college students and their transition into higher education. Examples of these topics include diversity and inclusion, social connections, academic support, substance use, life skill development, career preparedness and citizenship. Collaborate with campus and community partners to enhance programming with content area experts. Engage residents in conversations to determine the programming needs of the community. Submit thorough and thoughtful evaluations of each program.Essential
5Other Duties As Assigned: Perform basic custodial duties in assigned building including weekly vacuuming and trash removal.Essential

RAs are expected to devote time to connecting with residents in such a way that builds rapport between the Residence Life staff, other housing residents and the greater PWSC community. This means successful candidates will possess the ability to engage with and motivate others to be active participants in the PWSC community.

RAs are responsible for responding to a variety of communal disturbances, conflicts and emergencies in a direct and appropriate way. Unusual and sometimes unpredictable hours are required due to the nature of this position.

Compensation for community development duties includes on-campus housing for a private studio apartment at no cost in return for 12 hours of community development work per week, including but not limited to, event planning, bulletin boards and hall/door decoration creating and resident engagement. In addition, the position pays $10.34/hr for 8 hours per week in housing cleaning duties including but not limited to cleaning entryway doors, vacuuming hallways and entryways, cleaning laundry rooms, student lounge, study room, storage room and turning over rooms for upcoming reservations. Together supporting the equivalent of a 20-hour work week. A schedule for the weekly cleaning hours will be created in consultation with the Residence Life Coordinator. Additional payment will be provided for the spring 2023 RA training at $10.34/hr.

NOTE:  a room discount will result in an adjustment for financial need.  Successful candidates will be required to notify UAA’s Office of Financial Aid of this change in need.

Due to the nature of the position, a commitment to one full academic year or the remainder of the academic year for mid-year hires is required. 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

RA's will be required to intentionally engage with residents both one-on-one and in group settings. Applicants must possess strong leadership skills, conflict mediation skills and positive decision-making abilities, as RA's are held to the highest ethical and professional standards. Applicants must be self-motivated, able to take initiative and work on projects independently, with minimal supervision. However, it is imperative that RA's be able to operate effectively in a team-oriented environment, to work collaboratively with other departments as an office representative and to demonstrate an appropriate level of self-awareness. Critical thinking skills, self-awareness and the ability to take initiative are paramount. Applicants are expected to design and facilitate student programs and activities, both independently and as part of a team. Applicants must possess the social skills, self-awareness and a reasonable level of comfort to interact positively, objectively and professionally with students, faculty and staff.

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

Preference will be given to current and past residential students. Experience living in college student housing or in planning campus activities preferred. Students who are eligible for the Federal Work Study Program are encouraged to apply.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Successful candidates must arrive on campus early prior to the fall semester to begin work on Thursday, January 12, 2023. They must be willing and adept at learning job skills. Current enrollment at PWSC in at least 12 credits and a minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 2.5 is required. This is a live-in position; Resident Assistants must maintain occupancy in PWSC's residential community for the duration of their employment.

NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.

Community Development 

  • Assigned to live in one of PWSC’s residential halls and serve as a resource to residents.
  • Facilitate Welcome Week programs (fall and spring).
  • Engage interaction among residents, idea sharing and community activity participation.
  • Host social and educational activities, plan floor/building activities, provide individual advising, assist in general community management and participate in facilitating connections between students and the larger Valdez Community. 
  • Serve as a role model and mentor to residents and explain, confront and report violations of the Student Code of Conduct and University regulations.
  • Participate in rotating duty coverage with other members of their staff team. Each RA will be assigned weeknight, week and/or weekend on-call duty as determined by their supervisor. Duty requires that RA's stay in the residential community and be available to respond to emergencies and enact life/safety response system.
  • Regular availability and visibility to residents is important. The RA position should have priority after academic-related commitments and before extra curricular activities.
  • Support and abide by the UAA Student Code of Conduct and University regulations.
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, staff development meetings and RA training.
  • Participate in 1-on-1 supervisor meetings.
  • Create monthly educational and community development bulletin boards.
  • Complete requirements of programming model.
  • Responsible for arriving early for staff training, may assist with unit cleanings and completing room condition forms prior to semester start, and assisting with general departmental preparedness for move-in. RA's may also be asked to remain on-campus later at the end of each semester to complete the closeout process.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Housing Duties

  • Facilitate housing check-in and checkout processes throughout the academic year.
  • Make sure all shared spaces (lounge, study room, laundry rooms) are kept neat and clean
  • Keep the main hallways clean and clear
  • Make sure the entryways of the housing buildings are clear and safe, especially during winter months
  • Turn over rooms for upcoming reservations
  • Other duties as assigned
