Position Summary:

This is the Managing Editor position at The Northern Light, the student newspaper at the University of Alaska Anchorage. This student position works up to 20 hrs/week during the academic year and is eligible for up to 40 hrs/week during the summer with a starting salary of $12.77/hour.

Duties:

Job Posting Summary: 

The Northern Light is a weekly University of Alaska Anchorage student publication, funded by both media fees and advertising revenue. The paper is published most Tuesdays during the school year and once to twice monthly during the summer. The Northern Light also updates web content regularly. The Northern Light is distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community.

The Northern Light managing editor supervises newspaper content, ensuring that deadlines are met and helping editors and writers develop quality publishable content. The managing editor is also responsible for writing articles as needed. The managing editor and the executive editor work together to manage and supervise the newsroom. The managing editor also serves as the executive editor’s proxy in their absence. The position assists in the recruitment process of personnel. The managing editor reports with occasional direct supervision to the executive editor.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate: ability to write and edit publishable articles or columns with attention to grammar, The Associated Press style, spelling, clarity, accuracy and thorough reporting; familiarity with word processing and Macintosh computers; completion of college level editing and reporting coursework or have equivalent experience; ability to meet deadlines and work cooperatively with other editors; ability to hire, supervise and coordinate staff, and; knowledge of news-gathering techniques, the First Amendment, the Freedom of Information Act and media ethics. General management skills, strong communication, team building, and problem solving are preferred. Ability to lead team of college journalists and work with business staff to meet newspaper's goals is preferred.

Typical Education/Training:

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.
d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.
f. Position reappointment is contingent upon successful progress toward degree completion and performance evaluation.
