The UAF College of Engineering & Mines (CEM) is recruiting for an outreach and engagement officer to lead implementation of CEM’s strategic communications and marketing plan, and to coordinate student activities promoting engagement with external stakeholders. The position works closely with the CEM leadership team to develop high-quality written and audio/visual content for dissemination to internal and external stakeholders including websites, marketing materials, mass emails, newsletters, and social media. The outreach and engagement officer will help CEM steward philanthropic support, help coordinate recruitment and K-12 outreach activities, and coordinate student professional clubs similar co-curricular student engagement efforts.
Develop and disseminate high-quality, engaging written and audio/video content for the college’s external and internal communications channels, including websites, marketing materials, mass emails, newsletters, social media, advertisements and others. Proofread, edit, layout and modify documents and coordinate the printing, publishing and distribution process. Create, develop, and maintain the College of Engineering & Mines (CEM) social media accounts, and other electronic applications. Maintain newsgathering processes in order to stay up to date with activities across the college, as well as issues related to engineering industries. Monitor and assess content/campaign performance metrics across channels, using data to inform future activities.Essential
In coordination with the UAF Office of Development and UA Foundation, perform fundraising development functions that are small in complexity and scope. Assist in program development and strategies for fundraising. Assist in implementation of recognition programs. Utilize the Tableau database to synthesize information and produce reports. Coordinate and support development activities and special events. Assist in developing support materials for specific fundraising activities and benefactors. Coordinate and promote CEM’s annual UA Giving Day effort, calendar year-end solicitation, and program-specific fundraising efforts.
Assist the CEM faculty scholarship committee chair in proactively monitoring and awarding CEM’s 80+ scholarships accounts. Assist the CEM dean in proactively monitoring and investing CEM’s 50+ general support foundation accounts.Essential
Raise awareness of and engagement with the College of Engineering—including its academic programs, research and activities—among key external and internal audiences. Collaborate with CEM leadership to develop and implement strategic communications/marketing plans and initiatives that build the college’s reputation as a trusted leader in engineering education and research. Strengthen and refine CEM’s brand, ensuring that organizational image and voice align with the college’s mission, vision and strategic priorities. Coordinate with CEM leadership to ensure alignment between departments, college and university. Coordinate with UAF university advancement to strengthen institutional messaging.
Develop and maintain systems, processes and workflows that promote efficient and coordinated mass communications throughout the college. Oversee the creation/dissemination of content within CEM departments and by external contractors, ensuring consistent quality and voice. As needed, provide training, guidance and recommendations to CEM employees regarding communications/marketing activities. Supervise student employees, ensuring effective communications and marketing activities within the college.
Organize, maintain, and direct interactions between CEM leadership and external advisory boards. Specifically, ensure that the CEM Advisory & Development Council (CEM ADC) maintains robust membership, conducts regular meetings, and provides consistent guidance to the college leadership.
Organize annual outreach-related CEM events such as the Awards Banquet and the E-Week Engineering Open House.Essential
20Recruitment & K-12 Outreach
Work with the CEM recruiter to assist in K-12 recruitment and outreach activities as needed. Assist in the planning and execution of the college’s student recruitment strategy and activities. In partnership with the CEM recruiter and Office of Admissions, help coordinate CEM faculty and staff participation in recruitment and K-12 outreach efforts, including organization of events for prospective students, development of materials and presentations, conducting classroom presentations, and representing the college at college and career fairs as needed. Assume the primary organizational role for the E-Week Engineering Open House generally held in late February.Essential
Serve as the staff-level coordinator and point person for student co-curricular activities such as engineering-related clubs, professional organizations, competitions, and research. Organize engineering student leaders to form a council (SLAC – Student Leadership Advisory Council) intended to share information with college leadership and coordinate collective activities.Essential
This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. While there may be opportunities for remote work, the successful applicant will be expected to work primarily on campus in Fairbanks, Alaska.
- Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills, with proven ability to supervise, communicate vision, and lead organizational culture change.
- Demonstrated knowledge of techniques and industry standards for all aspects of communications projects relevant to position, including writing; editing; visual, print and electronic graphic design, Web materials and audio-visual productions; news and feature stories; and marketing and advertising.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant computer information systems, desktop publishing programs and databases.
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations and laws relating to the administration of communications programs/projects.

- Familiarity with strategies, procedures and best practices in student recruitment.
Understanding of Alaska’s statewide media landscape.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Education or related field
Three years of progressively responsible experience relevant to the position, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

This is a full-time, Grade 79, minimum starting wage is $54,246 per year (actual salary will be DOE), 12-month position complete with competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.
