Position Summary:

The Alaska Earthquake Center is hiring a Systems Administrator to support the broad computing needs of the organization. As a member of our team you will work on one or more of the following areas: server virtualization software (VMware vSphere or equivalent), cloud computing services such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure, and/or database administration. 10Project Support: As a team member, work on moderate to complex software projects as directed by Earthquake Center management. Provide technical expertise relating to system setup, configuration, and support for projects. Use knowledge of languages including Python, Perl, and C to write new programs, modify existing software, and troubleshoot code for Earthquake Center operations.Essential
25IT Support: Serve as team expert in diagnosing and troubleshooting computing, networking, and device problems as needed. Serve as advisor in specialized technology areas. Develop innovative solutions to complex problems. Provide hardware and software support as well as technical consultations to personnel in the seismology lab. Contribute to discussions and provide recommendations to the group management involving Earthquake Center IT plans and future technologies. Collaborate in developing long range strategic plans for computing and networking information technologies.Essential
25IT Systems Monitoring and Backups: Respond to system failures within the computing facility 24/7 in coordination with the Systems team manager. Ensure mission critical systems incorporate fault-tolerant, automatic alarm, and remote monitoring capabilities. Conduct a routine backup procedure of critical systems and software. Devise testing and coordinate quality assurance activities.Essential
40Computer Systems Administration: Perform work under administrative supervision. Act as an expert to ensure that the Earthquake Center operates an enterprise-grade computing facility. Provide extensive operations support, storage management, and problem resolution for one or more operating systems platforms. Keep operating systems, software, and firmware up-to-date. Maintain a well-managed code repository and deploy environment for software updates. Be cognizant of and proactive towards digital security threats. Consult with maintenance contract provider technicians when hardware or software problems occur. Analyze the potential causes of software and service problems. Replace faulty hardware, if needed, and/or install software patches after consulting with technician.Essential

Additional Position Information:

This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska.  While there may be a current opportunity for remote work, the successful finalist will be expected to report to duty at the UAF office no later than 60 days from written notice provided by the university.

Advanced Linux system administration experience, including user account management, system services administration, disk management, and shared file system administration.

Advanced knowledge of managing enterprise level technology

Ability to and knowledge in administering server virtualization software such as VMware vSphere.

Experience with cloud-based services such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure.

Able to formulate and implement a robust backup and recovery strategy for a disparate set of hardware and software platforms.

Knowledge of modern digital security best practices.

Ability to engineer methods for the conception, design, implementation, documentation, and maintenance of large complex integrated software systems in both real-time and distributed network environments.

Ability to guide and mentor peers on tasks related to their area of expertise.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor degree in related field and 3 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Salary Information:
