Position Summary:

The Oceanography Department of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) seeks applications from exceptional candidates for at least two tenure-track faculty positions (each with 9-months state annual support) to complement CFOS’ breadth of expertise in fisheries and ocean sciences. We invite applicants who will further the mission of the Department and College by adding to our field and sea-going programs, including use of the ice-capable, Global Class R/V Sikuliaq. Applications from individuals in chemical, geological, physical, biological, or fisheries oceanography, or from related fields of expertise are encouraged. UAF is a federally recognized Alaska Native-serving institution that supports bridging Indigenous and Western sciences. These appointments are intended to be at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Duties:

1010% Service Faculty are expected to provide public service to the nation, state, and local communities by serving on advisory committees and participating in other professional, university, and community activities. 1. Public service: serving in organized, non-remunerative, educational and consultative activities which devolve from a UNAC member's professional expertise and further the interests or prestige of the University. 2. University service: serving as department head/chair, program director, or governance officer; serving on administrative and governance, department, college, school or university committees; and performing other tasks as deemed necessary by the University. 3. Professional service: reviewing grant/contract proposals, serving as an editor and/or reviewer for a journal, serving as accreditation reviewer, serving on a professional licensing board, as an ad hoc reviewer in the UNAC member's area of expertise; as an officer in a professional society; organizing and/or chairing conferences, symposia, seminars, etc.; teaching short courses, seminars, etc. that are not regular academic courses; editing journals, books, special volumes of papers, or other relevant activities.Essential
4040% Research All professional activities leading to publication, performance or formal presentation in the UNAC member's field, or leading to external funding recognizing the UNAC member's current or potential contribution to that field. Such activities include manuscript submission; grant/contract proposal submission; supervision of funded research projects; development and commercialization of intellectual property; additions to a portfolio; and other original contributions appropriate to the UNAC member's field.Essential
5050% Teaching The successful candidate will teach core courses and/or develop specialty oceanography and/or marine science courses for the graduate and undergraduate academic programs, develop a vigorous externally funded sea-going research program, as well as mentor graduate students. Faculty members will hold office hours appropriate for the courses being taught, and continue to develop and modify course curriculum. Classroom, studio, laboratory, and distance delivery instruction in regular academic courses with assigned contact hours; development and coordination of special undergraduate and graduate seminars. Preparation of student materials for classes; preparation of a new course or program or substantial revision of an older course or program. General advising of undergraduate students; supervision of student mentorships; supervision of graduate student theses, dissertations, and research/creative projects; supervision of undergraduate theses and research/creative projects. Supervision of directed study through individualized courses; non-credit educational programs on-campus or elsewhere; and other activities benefiting students' academic development.Essential

The College offers a B.S. in Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, a B.A. in Fisheries, Minors in Marine Science and Fisheries, Master of Marine Policy, Master of Marine Studies and Blue MBA degree programs, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Oceanography, Marine Biology and Fisheries. The UAF campus houses the Ocean Acidification Research Center, the Alaska Stable Isotope Facility, a Multi-Collector ICP-MS, the Advanced Instrumentation Laboratory (AIL), and the Genomics Core Laboratory for Nucleic Acid Analysis. Our coastal facilities include the Seward Marine Center, the NOAA-UAF Kasitsna Bay Laboratory, and the Lena Point Fisheries Facility. The College has over 150 faculty, researchers and staff based throughout Alaska, more than 100 graduate students engaged in thesis research in Alaska waters and throughout the world, and a growing undergraduate degree program in fisheries and ocean sciences.

The position requires research, education and service that support Alaska’s ocean resources and the communities that rely upon them. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core courses and/or develop specialty oceanography courses for the graduate and undergraduate academic programs, develop a vigorous externally-funded sea-going research program, and mentor graduate students.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Applicants with scientific and academic expertise will enhance the existing capacity of CFOS.

Applicants will demonstrate the potential and desire to build a vigorous, externally-funded, sea-going and/or field research program, to teach graduate and undergraduate courses, and to mentor and support graduate student.

The successful candidate will have the ability to establish a sea-going and/or field research program in chemical, geological, physical, biological, or fisheries oceanography, including use of the ice-capable, Global Class R/V Sikuliaq to further the mission and strengths of CFOS.

Experience working with private and public external constituencies.

Ability to collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines and institutions.

Typical Experience:

Post-doctoral and teaching experience is highly desirable.

Have a strong research and publication record appropriate to their experience and date of degree.

Required Education or Training:

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Oceanography or closely related discipline, and preferably have post-doctoral and teaching experience.
