The Volcanology Group of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) - Geophysical Institute (GI) is offering a fully-funded 2-year postdoctoral position in the field of volcanic eruption forecasting. The Postdoctoral Researcher will join our multidisciplinary team of graduate students, UAF faculty, national and international collaborators, and volcano-observatory scientists to work on developing innovative statistics-based eruption forecasting models for Alaska volcanoes, within the framework of the NSF-PREEVENTS Eruption Forecasting Project (https://sites.google.com/alaska.edu/preeventseruptionforecasting/PREEVENTS). This project capitalizes on the wealth of data from the Alaska Volcano Observatory, and the Postdoctoral Researcher will have the opportunity to engage in research on four interrelated disciplines: (1) geodesy, (2) seismology & infrasound, (3) volcanic gas geochemistry & remote sensing, and (4) petrology, geochemistry & physical volcanology. The successful candidate will utilize multidisciplinary time series eruption data from eight recently active volcanoes (Cleveland, Okmok, Bogoslof, Shishaldin, Pavlof, Veniaminof, Augustine, and Redoubt), and state-of-the-art techniques to develop volcano eruption models and forecasts while working with a diverse group of collaborators.
A postdoctoral research position is offered for a statistics-based modeler, who is expected to develop new statistics-based models to investigate the emergence of pre-eruptive and syn-eruptive patterns, with the final goal of generating probabilistic eruption forecasts through traditional and novel probabilistic techniques (e.g., event trees, artificial intelligence). This position will be based primarily at UAF and the researcher will have the opportunity to travel annually to work in-person with Dr. Marzocchi at the University of Naples, Federico II.
The expected start date for Postdoctoral Researcher is Fall 2022.
The Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to receive her/his PhD by August 1st, 2022, have a robust record of peer-reviewed publications, be scientifically independent, be highly motivated, and have excellent communication and teamwork skills. Required Education and Experience:
-PhD degree (already received, having completed all requirements and waiting graduation) in Geostatistics, Mathematics, Physics, Geology, Data Science, or related field. Two years of research related to the scientific field.
-Proficiency in Matlab, Python, R or similar software.
-Experience in stochastic modeling, probabilistic forecasts and hazard analysis of natural events, comparison between forecasts and observations, Bayesian logic, and/or machine and/or deep learning.
