The Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station is seeking a part-time technician who will collect forest and natural resource inventory data on permanent sample plots throughout Alaska. This position spends a majority of time in the field throughout the summer and works as a crew member with 3-4 other inventory technicians. The position provides opportunities to visit various forest sites across the State, including Copper River Basin, Tok, and Kenai Peninsula. Work schedule is mostly 8 days on and 6 days off, which allows plenty of time off to enjoy the Alaskan summer outside of work. This position requires travel away from Fairbanks via the road system and camping for 8 days at a time. The position requires working long hours in the field. Travel means mainly consists of highway vehicle, but may also include boat and ATV.
Experience in fieldwork, physical and mental capability of working long hours in the field, ability to work well in a team environment, and ability to follow directions but also work independently when necessary. Preference will be given to applicants with extensive field experience in forest inventory, familiarity with forest health issues, data analysis, as well as coursework in biology/ecology or other related fields.
Fieldwork in forestry, ecology and/or biology. Plant identification. Tree disease and damage identification.
REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
A valid driver's license will be required for this position. Coursework in forestry, biology, ecology or other related fields.
Hired to work 15-29 hours per week (or ‘undetermined’ regular hours). Requires 120-day continuous break after 18 months in temporary service. No benefits, except that health care may be offered after a six-month look back based on actual hours worked.
