Position Summary:

KRUA 88.1 FM, the student radio station at the University of Alaska Anchorage, is currently recruiting for the Program Director position. This student staff position is 20 hours/week during the academic year (with flexible hours in the summer) and starts at $11.50/hour.


Job Duties:

KRUA 88.1 FM is a student-run, non-profit educational radio station which represents the University of Alaska Anchorage. With a sizable number of student and community volunteers and a staff of about 4 students during the academic year, KRUA provides the UAA community with great music and entertainment over the air. Station staff maintain the station and abide by FCC regulations as well as community standards.

The KRUA Program Director is in charge of programming at KRUA 88.1 FM. It is the Program Director’s duty to manage the comprehensive quality of KRUA’s broadcast through managing on-air content, considering program diversity, maintaining KRUA’s station voice, and training volunteers to become on-air DJs. The Program Director will see that volunteer DJs adhere to station policy, and work directly with the Station Manager to supervise all KRUA staff members and volunteers as second in command of the station. The KRUA Program Director reports to the KRUA Station Manager with occasional, indirect supervision and will work alongside the Production, News and Music Directors. The successful candidate will be innovative, imaginative and motivating.

The Program Director will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Supervise programming at KRUA - Programming includes a balance of music, news, sports, and public affairs.
  • Curate and update the KRUA broadcast schedule. Advise volunteer DJs on how to develop and evolve a distinct radio program.
  • Screen shows to assess quality and provide feedback, provide show critiques.
  • Review and process production material (PSAs, promos, shows) for airplay.
  • Train volunteers to broadcast.
  • Ensure that the station and volunteers adhere to FCC and station policy
  • Work directly with KRUA Station Manager and fill in during Station Manager's absence.
  • Send annual station log reports to BMI.
  • Create quarterly issues list for KRUA’s online public file.

This position works up to 20 hrs/week during the academic year and is eligible for up to 40 hrs/week in the summer with a starting wage of $11.50/hr.

• Ability to train staff and volunteers, including developing and leading team exercises for morale-building programs.
• Ability to meet deadlines and work cooperatively with other editors, including hiring, supervising, and coordinating staff.
• Ability to work in an environment that requires public contact.
• Ability to utilize various social media platforms to publicize new music and KRUA rotation.
• Possess working knowledge of or willingness to learn media ethics, First Amendment rights, and the Freedom of Information Act.
• Familiarity with radio station operations and audio production is preferred.
• Familiarity with either Adobe Audition or Audacity audio editing software is also preferred.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Suite and Google Applications is also preferred.
• Familiarity with NexGen and Selector programs is also preferred.

Typical Experience:

This position requires a minimum of one year of experience with radio station operations, audio production, or equivalent knowledge obtained from coursework.

Required Education or Training:

To be eligible for student employment in Student Life & Leadership, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

Students must have successfully completed college courses at a minimum of sophomore standing. Graduate students are also welcome to apply.

Students must have successfully completed English 111 or an equivalent GER English course.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on training from radio station experience as either a volunteer or staff member.

The successful candidate must complete the first two KRUA volunteer trainings, consisting of voice tracking and public service announcements.
