This is a Student Assistant C Labor Pool at UAA for work with the Alaska Native, Indigenous & Rural Outreach Program, housed with the Department of Residence Life in UAA's residential campus community.
We are currently recruiting for the Spring 2022 academic year for Cama-i Room Hosts (CRH)
The CRH position is a unique and incredible opportunity to support and mentor UAA students who identify as Alaska Native, Indigenous, Native American, and/or rural Alaskan. CRHs are student leaders who create a welcoming environment in the Cama-i Room for the UAA and Anchorage communities. CRHs host activities that are social, educational, and celebrate the various cultures of Alaska. CRHs work during the weekends and the late evening hours of the week to support students in the Cama-i Room. CRHs also play a vital role in keeping the Cama-i Room and the Gorsuch Commons safe and comfortable spaces for their guests by enforcing policy and managing incidents that may occur while working in the Cama-i Room.
CHRs receive an hourly wage of $10.50 per hour for work inside the Cama-i Room.
Cama-i Room Host Responsibilities: The CRH’s commitment is for a full academic semester. Attendance at all training sessions is required.
Outreach to and support Alaska Native, Native American, and students from rural Alaska. Outreach may take the form of phone calls, door knocking, or tabling in public places.
Serve as a first-level responder to crisis incidents that occur in the Cama-i Room or in the Gorsuch Commons that come to the attention of the CRH.
Encourage interaction among residents, idea sharing, and community activity participation.
Report to supervisors any concerning behaviors in support of the wellness of residents.
Provide support for any resident experiencing a mental health crises or emergency situations that may arise.
- Serve as a role model and mentor to Cama-i Room guests, and explain, confront, and report violations of the Student Code of Conduct and University regulations.
Support and abide by the UAA Student Code of Conduct and University regulations.
Facilitate Welcome Home Weeks programs (fall and spring).
Programming requirements are as follows:
Plan and implement Cama-i Room programming that celebrate the various cultures of Alaska, and educate the UAA and Anchorage communities on issues important to Alaska Native, Native American, and rural Alaskan students (schedule set by Alaska Native, Indigenous & Rural Outreach Program Coordinator).
Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and leadership trainings.
Attend and participate in 1-on-1 supervisor meetings.
Other duties as assigned.

As paraprofessional staff members, CRHs must possess effective interpersonal skills and be able to work well as a member of a team.
Demonstrated leadership and peer helping skills are preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with experience living in university residential communities and/or university leadership involvement.
Successful candidates must have an interest in working with students and the ability to engage them in conversation. Must have an interest in or prior knowledge of Alaska Native, Indigenous, Native American and/or rural Alaska Cultures.

Preference will also be given to candidates eligible for work-study, a form of financial aid, although this is not a requirement for the position.

Required Education or Training:
Training for this position will be accomplished by shadowing the ANIROP coordinator. In addition, the ANIROP coordinator will provide structured training about the Department of Residence life and the expectations of the ANIROP program and the Cama-i Room. Regular feedback will be provided by the coordinator.
- Ability to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, and students.
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills and telephone etiquette.

To be eligible for this student position, candidates must:
a. Be admitted and enrolled in a University of Alaska system in a degree-program with a minimum of six (6) credit hours for undergraduate students or six (6) credit hours for graduate students during regular semesters of employment; or
b. For employment between semesters, be admitted in a degree-seeking program, and demonstrate plans to enroll for six (6) or more credit hours for undergraduate students or six (6) or more credit hours for graduate students in the next regular semester; and
c. Have at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average (GPA); satisfactory term grade point average (2.00 or above) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or their designee, and maintain successful academic progress.
d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlines above to substantiate employment eligibility.
f. Be in good disciplinary standing at the time of appointment and must remain in good disciplinary standing throughout the duration of employment. Should the Department of Residence Life student employee be placed on disciplinary probation, the individual will no longer be eligible for employment within the department.
g. Position reappointment from fall to spring semesters is contingent upon the following: academic eligibility, successful progress toward degree completion, performance evaluation, and judicial standing.
NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
To be eligible for student employment with the Department of Residence Life at UAA, a student must:
a. be enrolled in the university system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. for employment between semesters, have successfully completed six or more UA credit hours in the preceding semester and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester; and
c. not work hours which interfere with class attendance; and
d. have at least a 2.0 cumulative and term grade point average.
