Position Summary:

The UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) is seeking to fill an Information Technology Helpdesk student position. This position offers flexible part time hours between Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm making it easy to accommodate course schedules. The CFOS IT group is a small departmental IT group which provides IT services for approximately 300 faculty, staff and students at 5 major geographic locations in Alaska.


100%IT Assistant: This position will operate under the direct supervision of the CFOS IT Manager and will work closely with other CFOS IT staff for guidance and support. The primary role of this position will be service desk first response support for local and remote users. Secondary duties include IT procurement services, classroom distance deliver support, and IT maintenance tasks. Other tasks or projects may be assigned as needed.Essential

Candidates need strong customer service and communication skills as well as an aptitude for new technologies. Familiarity with software and operating system installations on PC and Mac computers as well as basic networking skills is a plus, however is not required.

This position provides an excellent opportunity for motivated candidate to gain hands on experience over a wide range of areas in Information Technology. It also provides flexible working hours to accommodate class schedules. The ideal candidate will be an eligible UAF student located on the Fairbanks campus who is interested in a career in IT.


Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac system and software installation and PC hardware support.
Skills/Abilities: Strong verbal and written communications skills. Strong customer service skills. Good time management skills. Applicants must be able to maintain professional working relationships with customers and peers. Applicants should be able to lift up to 25 pounds.


Applicants should have demonstrated coursework in an IT, computer or technology related field. Preference will be given to applicants who volunteer or have previous work experience in IT support.


High School Diploma or equivalent. Applicant should be enrolled as a student in a minimum of 6 credits with a minimum GPA of 2.0, or a newly enrolled student.

Special Conditions of Employment:

Applicants will be reviewed to ensure good academic and judicial standing. This is a full-time position up to 40 hours per week during the summer and 20 hours per week while school is in session, additional hours available during summer/winter breaks and during the academic year with approved waiver.
