Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) department of Student Life and Leadership (SLL) seeks a motivated and dynamic individual to serve as its Student Union Graduate Assistant (GA) for Fall 2021. This GA position provides critical support to the day-to-day operations and event management of the Student Union. The Student Union GA is primarily responsible for assisting with: 1)overseeing retail sales at the Information Desk and the Union Station coffee shop ; 2) student staff recruitment/hiring/training, and 3) marketing for building programs/services. This GA position reports to the Assistant Director for Student Union and co-supervises a team of 20+ Student Building Managers, Resource Assistants, and Baristas, as well as a Coffee Shop Manager and a Fiscal Manager. Overall, the Student Union GA serves as an integral member of a student-centered team, whose mission is to cultivate an engaged campus community at UAA. This position is 20 hours/week and starts at $17.54/hour; in addition to hourly wages, the Student Union GA receives health insurance and tuition remission by the University.

Job Duties:

Overall, the Student Union GA assists the Assistant Director of the Student Union and the Events Coordinator with carrying out the day-to-day operations and event management of the Student Union. As the welcoming hub of campus, the Student Union provides UAA students, faculty, staff, and the general public a place to gather, connect and belong. The Student Union operates a Coffee Shop, Info Desk, Gear Room, and Esports Lounge, among other services, and hosts over 2500 programs, fairs, meetings, and events sponsored by student clubs and UAA departments annually. The Student Union GA is primarily responsible for assisting with: 1) overseeing retails sales at the Information Desk and the Union Station coffee shop; 2) student staff recruitment/hiring/training, and 3) marketing for building programs/services.

This GA position assists with event management for a broad range of programs, events, and meetings that take place in the Student Union. They coordinate the ongoing recruitment, hiring, and training of student staff, including participating in or leading semester retreats and (bi)weekly meetings (as-needed). Finally, the Student Union GA is responsible for the marketing and promotions of building programs and services, such as outdoor gear rentals, room rentals, esports events, etc.

Based upon interest, skillset, and need, the Student Union GA may also take on focused projects such as sales inventory/revenue analysis, building policy research/development, or gear room oversight. The Student Union GA provides front-line support to building operations, including filling student shifts as needed. Work hours for the Student Union GA will be set around academic commitments, including evenings and weekends depending upon scheduled events. Additionally, as a SLL staff member, the Student Union GA receives collateral assignments, such as serving on a departmental working group or as a liaison to a campus partner. The successful candidate must be professional, reliable, and confidential. They must be able to carry out tasks and oversee others with little to no supervision. Overall, the Student Union GA must be committed to role modeling values of the Student Union, including quality customer service and teamwork.  


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Possess basic knowledge of building operations (e.g. staffing, scheduling, etc.).
  • Possess working knowledge of event planning and coordination.
  • Ability to perform and train others in basic customer service.
  • Ability to perform and train others in sales, cash handling, and reconciliation.
  • Possess knowledge of/ability to work with outdoor gear (preferred, but not required).
  • Possess knowledge of/ability to work with audiovisual equipment (preferred, but not required).
  • Possess knowledge of/ability to implement basic marketing principles (e.g. social media, web content, etc.).
  • Ability to supervise student staff including recruiting, hiring, and training staff.
  • Ability to lead student team of building managers, resource assistants, and baristas to accomplish goals of the Student Union.
  • Ability to exercise patience, focus, and understanding, and to lead others in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and good decision-making in working with customers and events in the Student Union.
  • Ability to carry out assigned tasks and projects with little to no supervision, and to delegate tasks to others.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google applications.
  • Proficient in internet/web systems (e.g. Safari, Firefox, etc.).
  • Proficient with general office equipment, personal computers, copiers, and scanners.
  • Possess good organizational skills.
  • Possess good time management skills.
  • Possess strong attention to detail.
  • Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Possess working knowledge of UAA and the university system, including events, programs, and services, as well as applicable state, local, university, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to research answers or information without oversight.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of all information.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with accommodation. 
  • Ability to successfully complete the UA FERPA and mandatory Title IX trainings.
  • Willingness to learn all job duties, and accept new job duties as needed.
  • Commitment to role modeling values of the Student Union, including quality customer service and teamwork.
  • Ability to perform and lead in a fast-paced, student-centered team environment.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Required Experience:

  • Prior work experience, preferably as a student and/or on a college campus.
  • Possess prior event planning experience.
  • Possess prior customer service experience.
  • Prior management or supervision experience preferred.
  • Prior cash handling, reconciliation, and sales experience preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and supporting inclusive environments.

Typical Education or Training:

To be eligible for a graduate assistantship at UAA, an applicant must be registered full-time (nine credits per semester; six credits, if in the field or in their last semester). All courses must be listed on the official Graduate Studies Plan. Audited classes do not count towards registration requirements. Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 9 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university. Enrollment in a graduate program in business, management, or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred.

Candidates must be flexible to work evenings and weekends as needed, scheduled around their academic commitments.

Candidates must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license.

Additional Information:

This 20 hour/week graduate assistantship is compensated in the form of hourly wages ($17.54/hour); tuition remission (maximum of 9 graduate credits); and GA health insurance coverage ($868 premium paid by department).
