The mission of the Learning Commons Writing Center (WC) is to promote the use of academic writing in all disciplines and at all levels as a tool for learning, communicating, self-expression, and critical thinking. WC consultations complement course-based learning and help contribute to student success. Consultants will be paid as level C student employees ($10.50/hour) for up to 20 hours per week, depending on need and availability. Remote and in-person work available.
Writing Consultants work closely with students, faculty, and administrators to help students become capable, successful writers. While most work is one-on-one with a student, Consultants will occasionally need to deliver presentations, lead or support workshops, or participate in group-learning programs. Consultants are expected to attend regular training sessions to improve their support skills.
- Attend all meetings and participate in Writing Center orientation and trainings.
- Follow all procedures and policies set by the Learning Commons and WC.
- Provide individualized consultation with students in all disciplines, at all levels, and at all stages of the writing process. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Consulting with students regarding global writing aspects such as thesis, evidence development, flow, logic, and effective argument.
- Tutoring students in pre-writing strategies including interpreting, understanding, generating, organizing, and elaborating ideas.
- Tutoring students in specific English areas, primarily in grammar, mechanics, and sentence structure, by effectively communicating the principles and techniques of the subject area.
- Consulting with the students regarding English language skills development.
- Work with students to improve their writing skills while helping them understand professor expectations.
- Maintain a professional and welcoming WC environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Arrive on time to all scheduled sessions, prepared to act in a professional manner that is sensitive and respectful of student needs,
- Seek coverage for any necessary absences, and notify the appropriate authorities in a timely manner of any schedule conflicts.
- Keep all information on students you work with confidential.
- Support and care about student success.
Ability to work assigned hours, possibly including some evenings or weekends, to understand written and verbal instructions, to communicate effectively, to take direction and work as part of a team. Must possess excellent problem solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to work with a diverse population. Ability to effectively communicate the principles and techniques of English writing for academic purposes. Familiarity with MS-suite applications, particularly MS Word.
Minimum of cumulative GPA of 2.0 with a 3.0 average in Writing/English coursework. Must have successfully completed Writing 211, 212, 213, 214 or an equivalent Writing/English composition course.
REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
To be eligible for student employment at UAA, a student must:
a. be enrolled in the university system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. for employment between semesters, have successfully completed six or more UA credit hours in the preceding semester and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester; and
c. not work hours which interfere with class attendance; and
d. have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average.

This is a pooled position. Applicants will be hired as needed.
NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
Prior tutoring experience preferred, but not required. Training provided upon hire.
