Position Summary:

The Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau is seeking a qualified individual for a bipartite (teaching and service), 9-month term (non-tenure track) Assistant Professor position to teach lower-division Chemistry and Biology courses beginning in August 2021. This position will support undergraduate programs in Biology, Marine Biology, and certificates in the Health Sciences. This position is an excellent opportunity for early-career biologists. The University of Alaska Southeast is located in Alaska’s spectacular Inside Passage and is home to a rich biodiversity of marine life.

Duties:

100%The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to teach lower-division lecture and lab courses in biology and chemistry. Fall 2021 courses will include: Human Anatomy and Physiology I (lecture and 2 lab sections) and Introduction to General Chemistry (lecture and 2 lab sections). Spring 2022 courses will include: Human Anatomy and Physiology II (lecture and 1 lab section), Introduction to Microbiology (lecture and 1 lab section) and General Chemistry II (1 lab section). This position requires a total of 12-14 contact hours per week in the classroom. The successful applicant will also be required to hold office hours and participate in appropriate university service activities.Essential

 

This is a one semester, term, non-tenure track position.  All offers will include a competitive salary, complete UA employee benefits package, and this assignment is covered by the UNAC collective bargaining agreement.   1. Applicants must have a M.S. (Ph.D. preferred) in Biology, Marine Biology, Fisheries, or related field.
  2. Ability to teach lower division chemistry and biology courses.
  3. A commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence and the ability to deliver effective undergraduate instruction in Southeast Alaska, a post-colonized setting and the cultural homeland of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following characteristics:

  1. Experience working with first generation students, non-traditional students, Native American/Alaska Native/American Indian and other diverse student groups.
  2. Experience teaching courses in an online/distance or blended/hybrid learning environment.
