The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is hiring an Anchorage Center Director. This Director position is a vital part of the fast paced Anchorage Center; the largest center in the statewide network. The Center Director is responsible for managing the Anchorage business advisors, representing the Alaska SBDC at Anchorage business and entrepreneurial events, developing and implementing new fundraising strategies and programs as well as maintaining relationships with local and regional stakeholders. In addition, the Center Director also serves as a business advisor, assisting Anchorage based businesses with many aspects of business formation or on-going business development as well as personal aspects of client personality, emotion, family, financial, and maturity implications and interactions. Applicants for this position should possess strong management skills, experience working with Alaskan businesses and the ability to develop strong partnerships across a broad range of stakeholders.

35 Manage Center staff and maintain organizational metrics and strategic goals. Work with the Regional Director to ensure regional goals and initiatives are met. Support / assist SBDC regional marketing and outreach programs. Build awareness of SBDC programs and services by engaging key referral sources such as banks, lenders, professional firms and other business resource partners. Understand, maintain and grow any center specific funding and partnerships that support the Center’s mission. 50 Provide technical assistance to small business owners in Alaska. Areas of advising include, but are not limited to: business plans, sources of financing, marketing, financial proposals, cash flow management and other aspects of business formation, development and expansion. Provide accurate and timely client session notes in authorized Neoserra database to enable client tracking and reporting. Follow-up with clients receiving the National Impact Study (Chrisman Survey) on an annual basis. Increase the percentage of initial clients that are “in business ” in your client portfolio. Essential
This position is a Full-time, term-funded, Grade 80, ($58,698/yr) DOE, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.
Substantive knowledge of business management principles, practices and techniques; strong financial planning skills; program development and management skills, employee management skills, communication skills, strong organizational abilities; resource development skills; several
years of business ownership and/or management. Proficiency and experience in public speaking, developing and delivering classroom instruction, and relationship building with other organizations. Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures relevant to federal and university agreements. Ability to focus and maintain strict regulations of database session updates/uploads. Ability to capture significant return on investment results and create comprehensive reports for purposes of grant proposal or quarterly reporting requirements. Strong analytical skills to best identify and develop plan for business development with client. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to organize and present facts and opinions. Occasional travel is required. Attendance of meetings that fall outside of the 8-5, M-F hours of operation are frequently required. Computer operating skills required. Significant understanding of Word, and Excel required. Cloud technology and Google Drive experience preferred.
Bachelor’s Degree in business or related field. Five years of business ownership or at least five years small business management (financial and personnel) experience is required. Ownership or management experience must include executive-level responsibility for usual and necessary small business operational functions. An equivalent combination of business ownership, training, education and experience may be considered in place of the Bachelor’s Degree.
Business development and financial accounting knowledge critical. Business consulting/mentoring experience is required. Significant business or administrative experience which demonstrates an ability to manage, direct, design, develop, and market a business assistance program as well as develop and leverage outside public and private sector resources and evaluate program impact. Knowledge of local economy and proven ability to build productive relationships with community leaders. Knowledge of federal, state and local financial and tax regulations relevant to small business. Preferred Education or Training: Areas of experience preferred: History/experience working with SBA district, regional, national offices Public speaking/advocacy strengths Ability to prepare reports for statewide, local, government stakeholders detailing program efficiencies and relation to strategic state priorities Experience with the banking/finance industry. Experience with the Anchorage Innovation/entrepreneurship community Experience with angel/venture funding
REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
A minimum of five years business ownership and/or five years as a key manager in a business enterprise is required. Ownership or management experience must include direct responsibility for usual and necessary small business operational functions.
