Position Summary:

Systems Engineering Student Assistants work closely with full-time systems engineers and administrators to support production services with campus and university-wide impact. Student employees have the opportunity to support websites, develop custom applications, deploy new technologies, and fully integrate themselves with the team. Programming experience is required. Computer science students seeking relevant work experience or anyone with an interest in DevOps are encouraged to apply.

Systems Engineering is part of OIT’s Service and Project Management Office and, as a result, frequently starts new services and projects. Student employees’ duties change as required but often include the following:

  • Researching new technologies and programming languages

  • Writing code

  • Configuring systems

  • Resolving customer requests

  • Communicating with customers via email and phone calls

Additional position details

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) Service and Project Management Office is seeking student employees to work closely with its Systems Engineering (SE) team. Student employees fully integrate with the team and work on the same production systems that staff support, so the ideal candidate is a UAF student that is professional, adaptable, productive, technically competent, eager to learn, and wanting to acquire relevant work experience along with their degree. Demonstrable programming experience is required.

SE’s projects change from sprint to sprint to satisfy the university’s changing needs and employees’ duties change accordingly. You could write a script to process web sites one week, deploy virtualized desktops or servers the next, then write code for a custom application the week after that. What is consistent is the importance and quality expected of your work.

This is a part-time position offering up to 20 hours each week that school is in session with additional hours being available during summer and winter breaks. Student Assistant C positions start at $10.50/hour.

Education and/or training required for this position (including licenses)

High school diploma or equivalent.

Type and length of experience required for this position

UAF student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position

  • Programming

  • Ability to independently research new technologies, programming languages, and services
