We are seeking the right developer to enhance the center's public-facing and internal software products. Many of your projects will be highly visible to the public and stakeholders. As the primary web administrator, you will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the center's web framework. A knowledge of modern web systems, from underlying server technologies to displaying end products, is highly desirable.
You will also be called on to work on a team to develop codes that enhance and expand the capabilities of our earthquake processing system. You will work closely with scientists and technical experts to create tools that stakeholders can rely on in a crisis to protect lives and property. Your contribution to the Alaska Earthquake Center team will help to reduce the impacts of earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions in Alaska.
The center is housed at the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, where it has served for decades as the definitive source for earthquake information in Alaska. We are the primary source of earthquake information for thousands of Alaskans, government agencies, and private firms every day.
Our work environment mixes staff with a wide variety of scientific, technical, and communications expertise. You will have significant discretion to figure out the best solutions to your tasks. 20 IT Support:
Work with the System Administrator to diagnose and troubleshoot computing, networking, and device problems as needed.
Assist in updating and fixing issues with the Earthquake Center virtual cluster hardware and software.
Contribute to discussions involving Earthquake Center IT plans and future technologies.
Collaborate in developing long-range strategic plans for computing and networking information technologies.
Facilitate alignment of information technology services to serve University and departmental missions, goals, and priorities as designated by the organization. Essential
30 Scientific Software Development:
Use knowledge of programming languages to write new programs and modify existing software for Earthquake Center operations as part of a small programming team.
Support, as directed, affiliated research staff with technical needs and coding.
Work on complex Information Technology (IT) projects as a team member. Projects may include hardware and software deployments, software development, and creating and implementing testing protocols.
Translate project requirements into actionable items for the team.
Within guidelines, organize, prioritize, and implement work activities as assigned. Essential
50 Administer and Develop Web-based Products:
Oversee the administration of web-related software for the Earthquake Center, including setup, configuration, updates, and security.
Under high-level guidance, create new web products for public and internal use.
Detect, track, and solve bugs and issues related to web content.
Keep up-to-date on technologies and services and strategize implementation plans with management to ensure that the Earthquake Center’s web presence is secure and sustainable.
Use problem-solving and analysis to resolve standard software and hardware problems and issues, which may require researching issues involving multiple components or systems to determine and solve problems. Essential
Advanced knowledge and experience with enterprise-grade information technologies including hardware and software, cloud computing, and data and network security.
Experience administering web servers and services.
Ability to understand how complex systems relate to each other.
Ability to analyze unusual, non-routine, and complex situations and problems and devise and implement alternative strategies for solutions.
Ability to serve as an expert for web systems.
Ability to work as part of a team and guide team members in area(s) of expertise.
Knowledge of digital experience standards and implementation.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (i.e. Information Technology or other related field) and 3 years experience in an Information Technology field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
