The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR) is inviting applications for a Research Integrity Administrator. The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) promotes integrity in research and teaching while ensuring a safe and productive work environment. The Office of Research Integrity (ORI) facilitates the responsible conduct of research through educational, preventive, and service activities. Organizationally, ORI is located in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.
The Research Integrity Administrator will provide support services that are crucial for the University community to comply with and navigate federal law, regulation and policy on the protection of human participants in research, animal subject protections, and biosafety. This position works closely with the UAF research compliance committees: Institutional Review Board (human subjects), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (animal subjects), and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (recombinant DNA and infectious agents). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with researchers, staff and management across many UAF departments to help ensure the responsible conduct of research at UAF.
15 Education and Outreach Roles:
Train new committee members with the chair and appropriate administrator (e.g. AV, HPA, and/or IO). Assist with continuing education through monitoring and notifying the relevant committee on conferences and training programs.
Complete committee directives by implementing, coordinating, and tracking mandatory training and continuing education for researchers and their research team as well as committee members and senior administrators. This includes administration of the online Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) and the AALAS Learning Library.
Work with the Animal Resources Center to track in-person and hands-on training provided to researchers working with animals in UAF animal facilities or in the field.
With committee approval, participate as a trainer to faculty, research staff, UA administrators, or as a guest instructor in university courses. Tasks may include addressing regulatory requirements and UAF processes relevant to one of more of the three compliance committees.
In response to inquiries by university faculty, staff, students, or the general public, advise and/or direct questions to a local expert, with respect to federal, state, and university laws, regulations, and policies related to the UAF Human and Animal Subject Research Protection Programs, and Biosafety.
Update website content for ORI and each of the three committees.

15 Federal Regulatory Compliance Roles:
Collaborate with investigators to ensure that regulatory compliance and ethical issues are concisely communicated, negotiated, resolved, and properly documented in accordance with research committee guidance and requirements.
Work as part of a team to ensure continued administrative compliance with federal regulation and policy addressing research involving animals, humans, recombinant DNA, and infectious agents. This team includes the VCR (who is the designated UAF Institutional Official or IO), the committee chairs, the Attending Veterinarian (AV), the Human Protections Administrator (HPA), and the Biosafety Officer. Team activity will include: development, refinement, and/or dissemination of policy and guidance documents that promote the responsible conduct of research at UAF.
Monitor national trends in research compliance policy and present this information to relevant committees for discussion.
Serve as an intermediary with internal and external auditors assessing research compliance programs at UAF (e.g., USDA, OSP, OHRP, OLAW).
Coordinate with the AV during unannounced annual inspections to assess university compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations.
Coordinate with the appropriate research compliance committee, HPA, AV, and/or Biosafety Officer to review and address complaints, occurrences of non-compliance, and unanticipated problems involving the use of animals, participation of human subjects in research, and biosafety.
Prepare reports and notifications of non-compliance for the IO to submit to the appropriate federal regulatory agencies, sponsors, and UAF officials or department heads as appropriate. Develop reports under the direction of the appropriate compliance committee and university officials (e.g., the AV, HPA or Biosafety officer). Essential
70 Coordinator for Research Compliance Committees:
Provide administrative support to the UAF compliance committees: Institutional Review Board (human subjects), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (animal subjects), and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (recombinant DNA and infectious agents).
Schedule regular meetings, develop an agenda based on protocol submissions and direction from the chairs, determine quorum prior to meetings, record meeting deliberations (including minority opinions), and prepare committee decision letters for the principal investigator.
Serve as the primary administrator of the UAF electronic compliance administration system, IRBNet. This system houses protocol submission, review, modification, and tracking, as well as committee meeting agendas and minutes.
Serve as the first contact point for researchers who may require protocol review prior to initiating their research activities.
Provide orientation, instruction, and assistance to investigators to properly navigate IRBNet and submit their research protocols, reports, and associated documents for review.
Pre-review protocol submissions for completeness prior to dissemination to committee members. Retrieve from the internet or electronic databases information relevant for protocol review if requested by committee members.
Serve as the primary analyst, with approval of research compliance committee members, of all compliance protocol/assurance applications including authority to exempt human subject research protocols from the requirements of the code of federal regulations.
Coordinate compliance protocols with proposals, grants, and contracts.
Evaluate proposals prior to submission for compliance issues.
Provide coordination of research protocols with collaborating institutions and sub-awardees.
Work with internal and external sponsors, investigators, unit proposal offices, and UAF’s Office of Grant & Contract Administration to ensure that all research compliance requirements are fulfilled prior to award and throughout the life of the grant or contract.
Develop and maintain several databases to generate recurring and/or special reports. Prepare a variety of internal university reports and annual reports that the Institutional Officer (IO) sends to federal oversight agencies; meeting minutes; and inventories (e.g., active animal or human study protocols, yearly animal use, etc). Broad understanding and knowledge of the Acts, Regulations, Policies, and Guidelines governing research and teaching activities. This includes but is not limited to 9CFR, 45CFR, 21CFR, general lab safety, biohazard disposal, and PHS Policies pertaining to human and animal subjects.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Business Management or a Science-related field and 5 years’ experience of management in a science- or health-related industry OR an equivalent combination.
Applicants with the following experience or education will be given preference:
*Hold certifications or training in research compliance.
*Have obtained a master's degree or higher. *Have earned professional certificates in other appropriate fields such as Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA), Certified IRB Professional (CIP), and/or Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR). *Demonstrated experience and leadership in the field of research compliance. Experience working with faculty. *Experience in communicating information of sensitive and confidential nature both internally and externally as appropriate.
