Position Summary:

The Northern Light, the student newspaper at the University of Alaska Anchorage, is currently recruiting for the Marketing Representative position.

Duties:

The Northern Light is a weekly University of Alaska Anchorage student publication, funded by both student media fees and advertising sales. The paper is published Tuesdays during the spring and fall semesters and bi-weekly during the summer. The Northern Light is distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Total distribution is 2,000 copies weekly during the spring and fall semesters and 2,000 copies monthly during the summer. In addition to print circulation, The Northern Light publishes new web content weekly on their website: thenorthernlight.org.

The Marketing Representative will work closely with the Ad Manager and Executive Editor to execute a weekly, monthly, and annual advertising sales plan for The Northern Light by promoting and selling print and online advertisements to UAA departments and student organizations. Alongside the Ad Manager, the Marketing Representative will also be responsible for weekly campus distribution of the newspapers each Tuesday, by 5 p.m. Each week, the Marketing Representative will send out papers of each issue to people on our mailing list, which must be maintained regularly. The Marketing Representative will work closely with layout to ensure all ads have been received for the current issue and are correct in size and on a designated B&W or color page. Ability to lift 25-50 pounds and work under minimal supervision during distribution is a must. The Marketing Representative reports with frequent direct supervision to the Ad Manager.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Possess strong communication skills, verbal and written.
• Possess a willingness to learn and be receptive to constructive feedback.
• Ability to sell The Northern Light advertising opportunities to clients.
• Ability to meet deadlines and work cooperatively with other staff members, particularly the Ad Manager and Executive Editor.
• Ability to maintain regular business hours.
• Possess familiarity with Macintosh computers.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Photoshop is also preferred.
• Familiarity with sales and advertising practices is preferred.
• Familiarity with customer service practices is preferred.

Required Experience:

No prior experience is required for this position, though prior sales or advertising and customer service experience is preferred.

Typical Education or Training:

To be eligible for student employment in Student Life & Leadership, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

This position works up to 20 hrs/week with a starting salary of $10.50/hr.
