Position Summary:

The Student Services Coordinator will help establish a continuity of mentorship and academic excellence by bridging students with NSS, the University, and Community Partners. The SSC will also be responsible for developing other programming opportunities and partnerships. The SSC will deliver recruitment and outreach. The SSC will play a vital role in the development, support, and evaluation of programming and recruitment efforts for UAA’s Alaska Native students.

20Cohort Development- The Student Services Coordinator will utilize NSS as well as other institutional and community resources to build a cohort of students with their unique needs in mind. This includes the assessment of programs and services on a regular basis. Develop reports, graphs and charts to demonstrate progress on departmental goals, to include documents for the mid and year-end reports. Collect quantitative and qualitative data on retention programs and processes, analyze data, assess outcomes based on data, and prepare and present reports of findings.Essential
35Programming- Assist in the development, coordination and implementation of academic support programs and services that promote the mission of NSS, the Dean of Students Office, Student Affairs, and UAA. With guidance and support of the Director, this position will coordinate the implementation of and provide on-going support of the two-year Native Early Transition (NET) Program, which serves Alaska Native students in successful access, recruitment, retention, persistence and completion through the utilization of existing campus programs (EAB/SSC Campus and Degree Works/Banner, etc.) and utilizing a series of planned and intentional interventions within a given semester. Design, develop, implement, and assess student programming to ensure program efficacy.Essential
35Student Services- With the guidance and support of the Director, collaborate with the discipline-specific Native student and general student support programs at UAA to develop strong student pathways both into NET Program and then into degree/discipline specific advising and mentorship opportunities. In collaboration with other UAA units, develop a procedure that provides assistance and follow-up services to incoming Alaska Native students to ensure their applications, financial aid, and on-campus housing are submitted in a timely manner. Create and maintain an operating manual of the procedures. Establish and maintain relationships with appropriate academic and student affairs units within the UA system, secondary, and postsecondary schools, and parents to support a seamless transition from high school to UAA. Work with students and foster their Interaction with appropriate academic departments regarding degree information, university and college requirements, and pertinent university deadlines. Design and conduct onboarding programs and presentations for Alaska Native students regarding UAA and student success initiatives across campus.Essential

The Student Services Coordinator (SSC) in Native Student Services (NSS) is responsible for developing programming for our Alaska Native Students. They will be an integral part of both the student-centered programming at NSS and General UAA Student leadership team . Working with the Director and Assistant Director, the SSC will be responsible for on-campus, student-centered programming to include the on-going delivery and development of the Native Early Transition (NET) Program. The NET program is a 2-year program, initiated by a 5-day early occupancy/transition week aimed to assist rural Alaska Native students in transitioning to campus in a more intentional manner. The first year of the NET program focuses on tying Alaska Native students into both UAA and the larger community by focusing on academic and cultural programming within two 3-credit sequential University courses. The second year of NET will focus on dual mentorship, wherein 2nd year NET students are mentored by an academic professional in the student’s pathway. The student mentee will then mentor 1st year NET students. The SSC would be responsible for coordinating the various UAA Departments and community partners involved in NET programming as well as collecting data and metrics related to on-going program efficacy.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

This is a professional program development and student support position. It requires knowledge of the institution, applicable federal and state law, and best practices; analytic and quantitative skills; strong interpersonal skills; excellent listening and communication skills; and knowledge of secondary education in rural Alaska.

1.Comprehensive knowledge of the UAA's student support programs; such as, Native-facing academic programs, First Year Advising, Student Life and Leadership, the Care Team, Disability Support Services, the Multicultural Center, Military and Veterans Affairs, Financial Aid, the Cama-i Room, TRIO, and other academic planning and support services. Clear understanding of university academic policies and procedures. Ability to refer students appropriately.

2. Demonstrated commitment to working with and assisting Native and rural students. Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communications skills. Excellent listening and communication skills, both verbal and written, including public speaking.

3. Knowledge of secondary education in rural Alaska and Native organizations that fund post-secondary education students.

4. Knowledge of best practices in student support, mentorship development, and bridging incoming students to a university setting, including legal issues associated with student affairs and higher education.

5. Strong computer skills with various software products in word processing, spreadsheets, electronic presentations, and databases. Ability to utilize student retention and student success electronic data tools to record, manage, and track student interventions. Ability to access both individual and aggregate data information from a large mainframe system. Ability to interpret and produce statistical information and reports.

6. Ability to work independently, to be self-motivated to manage detail, and to interact successfully with many different people in a fast-paced environment. Organizational and implementation skills. Diplomatic, interpersonal, networking, and cooperative team-building skills.

7. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with transitioning from rural Alaska to urban environments and some working knowledge of the difficulties and advantages of a rural/remote Alaskan experience.

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

This position requires a mastery of cross-cultural communication and knowledge of and experience with rural Alaska and the Alaska Native populations. Successful experience working in an academic setting with college students of diverse ages and cultures. In addition, proficient oral and written communication skills, computer and Internet skills are required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Minimum requirement: Bachelor's degree from a post-secondary institution whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation and two years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

This is a full-time, Grade 78, minimum $23.60/hr, DOE, 11-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. This is an open until filled recruitment with the initial application review taking place on June 2, 2020.
