Position Summary:

The Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension is looking to add a Research Professional to assist with projects and research in the Plant Pathology and Biotechnology lab.

Duties:

10Daily maintenance of the lab, including cleaning, monitoring and ordering supplies, gathering estimates and gathering estimates for equipment and repairs.Essential
10Literature search and protocol preparation.Essential
20Documentation and writing reports based on research results.Essential
60Responsible for carrying out daily operations of research in the Plant Pathology and Biotechnology lab. Research will be carried out independently with intermittent direction. Responsible for research activities concerning Alaskan agriculture and food security including, but not limited to, soil microbiome characterization and biological control discovery/development.Essential

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of research methods and analysis.
  • Skilled in accurate data collection and documentation.
  • Ability to follow and develop protocols.
  • Knowledge of chemical safety.
  • Communication skills to create and deliver presentations.
  • Ability to survey methods/administration.
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis.

Typical Experience:

  • Basic microbiology techniques including, but not limited to:
    • Aseptic technique
    • Pour plates and media preparation
    • Bacterial and/or fungal isolation
    • Inoculating agar plates/broth
    • Microscopy (Light and/or SEM)
    • Slide preparation and staining
  • Molecular Biology/Biochemistry techniques:
    • Gel electrophoresis
    • DNA extractions using kit or written protocol
    • Transformation and/or cloning
    • PCR
  • Field work experience is a plus

Required Education or Training:

Bachelor's degree in Plant Pathology, Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related field with 6 months experience in a lab setting.

This is a full-time, Grade 78, minimum $23.60/hr, DOE, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.

Term Position:

This position is a term-funded position and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University's discretion.
