Position Summary:

Nanook Recreation's Outdoor Adventures Program is looking for adventurous UAF students to join our Trip Leader and/or Rental Center teams! You will rent people outdoor gear, sign them up for trips, answer questions about outdoor recreation, teach outdoor skills and you can also become trip leaders for a variety of adventures in the wilderness of Alaska.

Duties:

Nanook Recreation's Outdoor Adventures Program is looking for adventurous UAF students to join our Trip Leader and/or Rental Center teams!

Position Summary:

This position will assist with all aspects of the Outdoor Adventures program from trips and equipment rental to climbing operations.

The mission of Outdoor Adventures is to foster personal growth and a spirit of adventures for the UAF community through education, experience and accessibility in the wilderness of Alaska and right here on campus. 

Outdoor Adventures is part of the whole Nanook Recreation team, which also includes the Student Recreation Center, Patty Ice Arena and the Patty Pool. 

Outdoor Adventures student employees have a variety of specialized areas for work such as:

  • Assisting in the planning and implementation of outdoor trips and classes including, but is not limited to, equipment and food preparation as well as participant registration and tracking

  • Assisting with the Outdoor Adventures equipment rental operation including but is not limited to, checking equipment out and in and the cleaning and maintenance of the equipment inventory

  • Assisting with programming at the climbing wall, including but not limited to, climbing instruction, wall maintenance and route setting on both ice and rock.

All applicants must be willing to work nights and weekends.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to operate independently within departmental standards of conduct and professional expectations with proper training, awareness of risk management and safety concerns.
  • Enthusiasm, desire to learn, and desire to work as part of a team. 
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Reasonable level of physical fitness.
  • Dependability, responsibility, and punctuality.

  • Awareness of and appreciation for individual uniqueness and diversity.
  • Knowledge of, and/or interest in, outdoor recreation and fitness activities.

Typical Experience:

  • Background in outdoor recreation.
  • Ability to work during the academic year.
  • Previous experience working with and/or participating in Outdoor Adventures Programs or classes.
  • Medical training such as Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid.
  • Other documented training in outdoor recreation, leadership and safety (e.g. Swiftwater Rescue certificate, ACA training, Avalanche training, AMGA/PCIA training, NOLS courses, Leadership certificates or classes, etc.).

Required Education or Training: 

  • Valid Driver's License and Clean Driving Record.
  • Ability to obtain certifications in CPR, Standard First Aid, and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator.

This is a Student Assistant C; minimum starting pay is $10.50 per hour.

Applicants must be enrolled as UAF students taking a minimum of 6 credits per semester with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or a newly enrolled student.

REVIEW DATE:

This is a pooled position, which means that the position remains open over the entire academic year and students may apply for the position all year. When the department needs to fill a position, they review the current “pool” and call students for interviews. Students who were not hired for one position still remain in the pool for other positions.
