Position Summary:

UAA Center for Human Development Tapestry program is recruiting a Peer Mentor for part-time summer employment. Under the supervision of the Lead Instructor/Job Developer, the Peer Mentor will assist and support Tapestry Summer Academy Work Experience participants in the classroom and at work experience placement sites to develop pre-employment readiness skills, research career interests, develop a career plan, and complete a work experience placement with community host “employers”. The emphasis of the program is to develop skills to promote job readiness and related work skills for participants leading to successful employment upon completion of their public education.

Duties:

100The Peer Mentor will assist participants with career exploration activities, developing individual career plans, and facilitating successful work experience placements in community host employer businesses. Specific activities may include transportation support (bus training, scheduling, etc.), employee – supervisor communication strategies, time management, personal hygiene, social interactions with co-workers, etc. The Peer Mentor will assist with work experience placement monitoring and evaluation. All assigned activities will be related to directly supporting participants of the Tapestry Summer Academy Work Experience individually or in related group activities.Essential

Position Summary:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be between the ages of 20 – 27
  • Must have access to reliable transportation
  • Must be willing to support participants who experience disabilities in the classroom and community work experience sites

Required Experience:

  • 6 months to 1 year related experience or equivalent knowledge/skills
  • Experience working with computers; preferably with Windows operating system

Education or Training:
High School Graduation or the equivalent

Special Conditions of Employment:
Background check for working with minors will be required before being hired.
Protection of Minors Training will be required at the time of hire.

Assignment Information:
Part-Time, temporary, available only for specific times and activities during June and July, maximum of 160 hours of paid employment will be available, not eligible for healthcare.
