Position Summary:

The UAF International Arctic Research Center and the Scenarios Network for Alaska & Arctic Planning seek a Software Programmer & Systems Administrator to support a range of research initiatives aimed at helping the nation and the world understand and adapt to the impacts of climate change in Alaska, the Arctic, and beyond. In this diverse position, you will help develop and maintain web-based tools, visualizations, ecosystem models, and computational infrastructure to support climate change, infrastructure, and resource management issues across Alaska and the Arctic. You will assist researchers in cutting-edge work and build solutions that will be directly utilized by land managers, policymakers, and communities. Join a team of programmers, data scientists, science communicators, and researchers to better organize and apply UAF’s research knowledge and data products to real-world problems. 30Systems & Infrastructure Development & Maintenance - Implement and maintain continuous-deployment systems (CI/CD) to support multiple system-wide projects - Implement infrastructure-as-code configurations to allow efficient and effective web tool performance - Perform infrastructure and software deployment, configuration, troubleshooting, tuning, monitoring, and troubleshooting on cloud-based compute environments (e.g. Amazon Web Services) - Coordinate and communicate with on-site and vendor infrastructure teams as required to develop and deploy infrastructure and softwareEssential
60Software Development - Perform work under general direction - Performs programming tasks in a variety of software languages (full-stack development) that impact long term capabilities. - Develops full-featured web and mobile applications involving complex geospatial and database components for public-facing websites - Develops, modifies, compiles, and executes scientific model code for research projects in high-performance computing environments - Determines appropriate data formats and performs data processing to transform data for application in tools and scientific models - Develop and perform automated and manual software tests to maintain quality control and accuracy - Use data visualization frameworks and software libraries to produce interactive visualizations of scientific data - Use geospatial software, frameworks and software libraries to prepare, process, and deploy geospatial web and mobile applications - Researches and learns about emerging technologies while maintaining a detailed functional knowledge of software and data systems - Regularly integrates new technology into existing systems and approaches. - Assist end-users with software, data, and end-user applications - available periodically for operational systems on-call support for 24 hours a day, 7 days a weekEssential


  • Expert-level software developer skills
  • Advanced technical knowledge of critical systems and multiple project requirements
  • Extensive experience working with Javascript and Python, with some experience with Shell and C/C++ preferred
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks (e.g., Mocha/Javascript, pytest/Python)
  • Experience with web-based mapping and data processing/geospatial libraries in Javascript and Python (Leaflet, Proj4JS, Pandas/Dask, Xarray, GDAL)
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Puppet, Terraform)
  • Experience with container-based workflows and management (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Demonstrated advanced technical, analytical problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to resolve multiple conflicting issues across computing systems
  • Demonstrated understanding and practice of software development best practices, including design, coding standards, and peer review
  • Strong relational database (SQL) and data structure skills.
  • Experience with scientific and geospatial data formats (Shapefiles, GeoTIFF, NetCDF)
  • Knowledge of software project management and development lifecycle (Agile, Scrum, Kanban)
  • Ability to understand technical and non-technical project needs
  • Excellent technical communications skills: written, verbal, email, and team collaboration tools (e.g., Trello, Slack)
  • Excellent problem solver
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Able to work effectively independently and with teams of local and remote peers and stakeholders
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with systems administration and databases.

Required Education and Experience: 

Master’s degree in a relevant field (Information Technology or another related field) and four years of progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
