Position Summary:

Researchers within the Institute of Arctic Biology seek a seasonal research technician to assist with ecological data collection related to the Bonanza Creek Long Term Ecological Research Program (LTER). In particular, we seek a technician who is able to safely pilot a boat on the Tanana River.

60Data collection. At field sites, collect data on site characteristics, plant characteristics, and damage caused to plants by insects, moose, and hares. In the lab, measure plant damage to leaves, measure leaf characteristics, prepare plant tissue for chemical analysisEssential

Approximate employment dates are from late April through October. We are open to discussing flexibility in start and end dates for students.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to pilot a boat safely on the glacial river.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
  • Interest in ecology.
  • Good organizational skills; physical fitness; and good judgment.
  • Willingness to work outside under a variety of weather conditions.

Required Experience:

Experience piloting a boat required.

Experience with ecological research and piloting a boat on a glacial river preferred.

Typical Education or Training:

Some undergraduate courses in biology, especially ecology, preferred.
