Position Summary:

The Alaska Satellite Facility is seeking a Science Consultant who thrives in a fast-paced environment. Independent of State funding, ASF has been awarded a $50 million dollar/5-year NASA contract to promote, facilitate, and participate in the advancement of remote sensing technologies supporting international earth science communities. As a Science Consultant, you will provide direct user support services to science researchers worldwide who utilize synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. In collaboration with ASF scientists, you will write technical documentation, lead web content management, author social media communications, and perform analysis of key organizational metrics. ***U.S. Citizenship is required for this position***


20Data Production: Design, implement and maintain database management systems and report data production success. Develop and maintain statistics to quantify satellite acquisition or data production success/failure rates. Report statistics to management and external funding agencies at regular intervals. Analyze data production failures to determine cause. Recommend alternate processing options or changes to the production system to improve success rate of data products. Document causes of failure and the resolution of those failures.Essential
20Project Evaluation: Evaluate scientific projects in diverse disciplines. Determine appropriate applications of satellite data to meet research goal. Consult with both internal and external researchers and staff regarding ASF capabilities and procedures and other DAAC holdings on behalf of the users. Respond to user inquiries regarding available earth science data. Produce maps and reports detailing geographic area of interest compared to satellite coverage availabilityEssential
20Project Support: Provide coordination of customer and technical administrative support including phone reception and triage for the user help desk/information line, maintaining user case files, monitor user project proposals, meeting scheduling and planning, and word processing. Involves using multiple computer platforms, i.e. Unix, PC, etc.Essential
20Science Writing: Create content for inclusion on ASF''s websites, newsletters, or interfacing with NASA, using knowledge of remote sensing, science principles, interviewing and writing skills. Track, evaluate and modify content as needed to update for current events and changes to ASF systems. Make recommendations to management and project teams for major content changes or overhauls to web presence elements. Assist in creation of multimedia products for improving user accessibility and insight.Essential
20User Support: Consult with both internal and external researchers and staff regarding ASF capabilities and procedures and other DAAC holdings on behalf of the users. Respond to user inquiries regarding available earth science data. Instruct new and existing ASF SAR data users on operation of multiple remote sensing database systems. On a day-to-day basis, an ASF science consultant will support a global user community in accessing more than 11PB of SAR images. As NASA’s leading SAR datacenter, ASF science consultants work with international space agencies by supporting product development, archiving, and distribution of global imagery datasets. The Science Consultant will play a vital role in the integration of Cloud Technologies supporting archiving and distribution of an estimated 150 petabytes of imagery for the next-generation Earth Observing SAR missions.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical writing experience coupled with expertise in as many of the following areas as possible:

  • Application of SAR imagery or development of end-user products/services
  • User support services
  • Scientific research and support
  • Software Development and/or IT Service Delivery
  • Web content management
  • Public communications


  • Knowledge of planning, analysis, remote sensing, and earth science research; acts as a scientific subject matter expert.
  • Knowledge of multiple systems and the ability to understand how systems relate to one another.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to combine inter-relationships between disparate problems and formulate situations.
  • Ability to formulate problem resolution.
  • Ability to analyze unusual, non-routine or complex situations and problems and devise alternate strategies for solutions.
  • Knowledge of scientific methods and principles used in research.
  • Cross-platform computer and application skills, to include MS Word, MS Excel, and databases.
  • Experience evaluating scientific requirements and goals.
  • Administrative office practices and procedures.
  • Excellent technical writing and multimedia creation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills working with scientists and engineers.

Required Education and Experience:

A Bachelors degree in an information technology, software development, or science research field, or equivalent experience.
2 years of experience in a science or IT field.

Salary Information:

This position is a full-time, non-exempt, term-funded, Grade 79 with salary commensurate with experience.
