Position Summary:

The Department of Health Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alaska Anchorage invites applications for a term Recreation Therapy/Therapeutic Recreation faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The position requires curriculum development, teaching, and service. This nine-month contract can also include a summer component based on program development efforts of the faculty member.


100Teach undergraduate courses in an innovative community engaged Bachelor of Science Kinesiology program. Coordinate the development of therapeutic recreation. Internship and practicum (pre-internship field experience) planning and preparation. Participation in professional, university, and community service. Mentor undergraduate students. Develop undergraduate therapeutic recreation curriculum materials that comply with NRPA-COAPRT accreditation outcomes and standards. Engage in curriculum development for a recreation therapy program resulting in eligibility for national examination for Certified Therapeutic Recreation specialist (CTRS) . Engage in scholarly activity in recreation therapy. The position can work with community agencies in direct practice and/or as a practicum instructor training students in therapeutic recreation. Develop the Denali Family Services Trailblazers project and other community-based projects in partnership with agency personnel, student interns, and staff members of agencies seeking therapeutic recreation programs. Plan and implement service-learning programs facilitating new partnerships with community agencies, creating and leading student placements, engaging in direct field supervision of students, and evaluating educational programs. Further development the outdoor behavioral health course offerings in partnership with other behavioral health disciplines within UAA.Essential

Summary of Department of Health Physical Education and Recreation:
The Department of Health Physical Education and Recreation is the home of the UAA Human Performance Lab that offers students opportunities for practice, service learning, and civic engagement in the disciplines of exercise science, health promotion, and rehabilitation. The UMED district of Anchorage, Alaska is adjacent to the university, and can provide unique opportunities for practice, student placement, program development, and interorganizational collaboration.

Summary of Position:
The Department is developing a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.  The position is responsible for preparing therapeutic recreation students who are qualified to pass the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist exam sponsored by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification as identified in the academic path standards. The applicant joints a group of dynamic faculty with diverse teaching, program development, and service interests. HPER faculty engage in numerous interdisciplinary teaching, service and program development efforts across the University of Alaska system. The department supports strong partnerships with many of the state’s health care and community agencies.

Candidates should have backgrounds in mental health, behavioral health, recreation therapy and/or therapeutic experience in working with members of vulnerable populations. This faculty member will contribute to the advancement of the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.  The position offers expertise that complements and expands the department’s philosophy and mission of teaching, scholarship and service to the university, community, and profession. The appointment is responsible for internships and practicums, which not only includes supervising practicum students, but also building collaborative partnerships with community-based organizations, agency supervisors, and coordinating credentialing.

  • Strong computer literacy including software and tools for assessment and evaluation.
  • Experience in educational theory and methodology, instructional design, student evaluation and outcome assessment.

  • Capacity to work with community partners in the integration of therapeutic recreation within agency behavioral health programs.

  • Practical field-based experience in the discipline of Therapeutic Recreation, wilderness or adventure therapy, outdoor leadership.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional organizations relevant to the academic and scholarly discipline of therapeutic recreation experience and/or interest in a strengths-based approach in Therapeutic Recreation, and a specialized area of study (e.g., gerontology, behavioral health, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, residential or community-based services for persons with autism or intellectual disabilities, veterans services, and/or inclusion).
  • Experience advising undergraduate students and supervising practicum work.
  • Professional involvement at the local and national levels.


  • Master’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation management, Leisure or a related discipline.
  • National Certification in Therapeutic Recreation via NCTRC or eligibility and examination by August 2020.


  • Ph.D. or Ed.D.  in Park, Recreation, Leisure, Therapeutic Recreation or a related discipline; one degree (or emphasis/concentration) from within the field of Therapeutic Recreation.
  • Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of a doctoral degree by August 2021.

Term, Assistant Professor rank, Bipartite, Full-Time, 9 months per year, salary commensurate with experience and preparation.
