Position Summary:

Responsible for developing and teaching credit and non-credit Marine Technology courses and for the general effectiveness of course organization, administration, and outcomes assessment. Students who successfully complete courses may receive college credit, and any licensing or credential essential for employment in the marine services workforce.

Duties:

Prince William Sound College is located in Valdez, Alaska. It is described as a place where the mountains meet the sea. The historic Port of Valdez is a scenic and important location utilized for shipping oil, commercial and sport fishing, tourism, and it is home to a Coast Guard station.  This position is responsible for developing and teaching credit and non-credit Marine Technology courses and for the general effectiveness of course organization, administration, and outcomes assessment. Students who successfully complete courses may receive college credit, and any licensing or credential essential for employment in the marine services workforce.

MAJOR DUTIES
Under general supervision, develops program and course outlines, goals and objectives

  • Prepares lesson plans for classroom instruction for credit and non-credit Marine Technology courses
  • Evaluates students’ progress in attaining goals and objectives
  • Requests and maintains supplies and equipment and prepares required budget requests
  • Maintains program certification requirements
  • Prepares and maintains all required documentation and administrative reports
  • Ensures safety and security requirements are met in the training area
  • Meets with students, staff members and other educators to discuss students’ instructional programs and other issues impacting the progress of the students
  • Assists with recruitment, retention, and job placement efforts
  • Coordinates the hiring of adjunct instructors
  • Manages administrative responsibilities related to scheduling, developing syllabi and teaching courses
  • Responsible for administrative duties related to student advisement, advisory committee meetings, and program development

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates degree in Marine Technology or closely related field from a regionally accredited college or university and at least 3 years of work experience in a position related to Marine Technology or
  • A combination of technical training, education, and experience to meet minimum standards for a faculty position in the University of Alaska Anchorage Career and Technical College

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of the principals and practices of the marine industry
  • A comprehensive knowledge of vessel maintenance, diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair
  • Ability to work flexible hours, and manage multiple and competing priorities
  • Knowledge of pedagogical practice and theory working with non‐traditional learners and various ethnic and socio‐economic groups
  • Ability to work and communicate cooperatively with students, faculty, and staff
