Position Summary:

The Arctic Domain Awareness Center seeks to hire a Communications and Research Associate to join our collaborative team for the last year of the Center award.

Duties:

10Other duties as assigned as it relates to the ADAC.Essential
10Supports ADAC Education and Administration Manager (EAM) for Student Fellow activities. As instructed by ADAC ED, and/in coordination with EAM, contributes to the administrative tasks for the Center. This includes support of hosting scientific research meetings and conferences, support to visiting officials from DHS, USCG and other federal, state, and local government and international representatives.Essential
10Supports ADAC efforts to provide “on-demand” research to DHS, USCG and other Federal, State of Local officials, as relates to Arctic Environmental Science, Security and Safety.Essential
15Contributes to ADAC workshop planning. This includes participating in workshop planning, literature review development, workshop execution, and follow-up report drafting. Supports ADAC Principal Investigator for scientific proposal analysis responding to ADAC funded solicitations.Essential
20Contributes to development of ADAC media products for public release. This includes supporting interviews with project researchers and their associates. Contributes photographs and video recordings to support the development of motion graphic videos describing ADAC research projects (that include project technical details).Essential
35In support of ADAC Executive Director (ED), contributes technical writing for ADAC workplans, reports and scientific papers associated with ADAC Arctic Science and Technology, including submissions to scientific journals. Supports content development for ADAC quarterly newsletters. Contributes to the development of media products for publication to U.S. government audiences (in particular, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).Essential

Summary:

The Arctic Domain Awareness Center is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Center for Maritime Research (CMR), led by the University of Alaska Anchorage. ADAC seeks to develop and transition technology solutions, innovative products and educational programs to improve situational awareness and crisis response capabilities related to emerging maritime challenges posed by the dynamic Arctic environment. The ADAC research network comprises of academic and industry teams focused in delivering solutions to problems faced by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and other Department of Homeland Security (DHS) mission operators across the Arctic maritime region.

As the Center’s core mission, ADAC conducts science and technology research, oriented on the decision support needs of the U.S. Coast Guard. Additionally, ADAC conducts a comprehensive student fellows program at both the undergraduate and graduate level, manages a “summer student intern” program, leads two distinct varieties/types of research development workshops, plus presents and participates at Arctic research venues across the U.S. and Canada. ADAC members are now conducting in a new effort to instruct at the University of Alaska Anchorage on Arctic environmental security at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels. ADAC is further developing its capacity to create knowledge products oriented to Arctic security, science and social science. ADAC has a nominal ability to provide “on-demand” research support to U.S. Coast Guard operations, which is potentially directly useful to U.S. Coast Guard District 17, District 9 and District 1. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of computer operations such as word processing, spreadsheet, and database. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to write clearly and accurately, spell and punctuate properly. Ability to follow applicable policies, rules, regulations and ethical practices. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups and to work successfully as a member of a team. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Prefer: Knowledge of technical area of expertise in communications derived from being involved in the ADAC project or applicable Department of Homeland Security (DHS) family.

Required Experience:

One year relevant experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. High school graduation can be substituted to for appropriate experience.

Prefer: Prior experience working with either the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) family or US Federal Service (preferably with the Department of Defense).

Typical Education/Training

High School graduation and one year relevant experience or a combination of training and experience.

Prefer: Minimum of an Associate's degree or higher in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM).

Position Details:

Full-time, non-exempt (hourly paid), benefits eligible, term-funded position.

Compensation: Grade 75, $16.99 hourly minimum.
