Position Summary:

The UAS Financial Aid office is seeking a Financial Aid Technician to assist students on obtaining funds to support their post-secondary degree endeavors. This a fast-paced, dynamic, and evolving program that is a good fit for candidates with a strong customer service background. This position utilizes a highly complex and technical financial aid program designed to assist students pay for their educational expenses. In addition our technician will learn how to navigate the seemingly ever-changing regulations governing the participation in these financial assistance programs. 10%Process all incoming paper financial aid checks; maintain logs so that location of each check is known at any given time; prepare checks for disbursement to the student or directly to student's account; record all scholarship awards in the UA financial aid management systems; deliver checks to UAS Cashier and notify students when checks need to be signed for; work with scholarship donor agencies to acquire critical information to posting checks e.g. process budget forecasts. Import alternative loan updates from ELM system.Essential
30%Analyze student and financial data using federal methodology to determine financial need. Calculate Cost of Attendance, Financial Aid eligibility, and awards. Proactively identify and resolve discrepancies. Receive, review, and record documentation from students that were submitted for their federal financial aid applications maintaining regulatory compliance as top priority. Investigate discrepancies and work with students to resolve. Assist with calculating Satisfactory Academic Progress. Resolve conflicting financial aid application data (e.g. citizenship status, defaulted loans, selected service registration, etc.) in order to facilitate financial aid eligibility. Work in coordination with other team members to create, maintain and assure accurate process flow and continuity.Essential
5%Scan financial aid documents, and make certain that all documents are indexed correctly so that they can be retrieved; shred documents that no longer need to be kept as hard copy documents. Other duties as assigned.Non-Essential
5%Update and maintain financial aid forms in both electronic and hard copy format on the financial aid office shared drive; maintain the integrity of the structure of the shared drive, ensuring that documents are stored appropriately, and purging documents on a regular schedule annually.Non-Essential
50%Serve as the initial point of contact to deliver financial aid information via in-person contacts, telephone, mail and email to students, parents, educators, and University personnel; assist students in obtaining and completing documents necessary to apply for federal, state and institutional Financial Aid. Communicate effectively with a wide diversity of people, including students, staff, educators and the business community concerning the nature of issues affecting the eligibility and awarding of student financial aid. Clearly and concisely articulate complex rules and regulations while creating a sense of competency and understanding of individual issues. Provide updates via social media and website.Essential

Required Education & Experience

  • Associate's degree, or the equivalent combination of training and experience
  • One year of relevant experience 

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience in a customer service 
  • Experience in finance 


  • Knowledge & understanding of computerized financial aid management systems
  • Excellent Customer Service Skills
  • Effective communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Ability to work on a team
  • Previous experience and familiarity with online student academic records system; Banner preferred
  • Knowledge about Federal, State, and institutional Student Financial Aid programs, policies, and regulations is preferred
  • Experience working successfully with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds is preferred

This is a full-time,12-month, non-exempt staff position complete with a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires typically are placed somewhere between steps one through ten on the staff salary schedule, Grade 77, (based on education and experience). Probationary Period:

Pursuant to University Regulation 04.07.020, new employees of the University are employed in an at-will probationary status for the first six months of employment. During the probationary period, employment may be terminated for no reason or any reason. Promoted employees also serve a probationary period with limited rights of retreat.
