Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Journalism Department is currently seeking one of America’s finest journalists as the C. W. Snedden Chair for the 2020 - 2021 academic year. We are looking for award-winning journalists to teach Alaska’s future reporters. We invite enterprising professionals to join us teaching and reporting in a land rich with untold stories.


100The successful candidate will teach 2 courses per year, put on seminars in Fairbanks, Anchorage, and or rural areas of Alaska. The candidate will also mentor students in the Digital Journalism major and help promote Journalism as a career.Essential

The C.W. Snedden Chair at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, endowed through a $2.6 million gift from the family of the former owner and publisher of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, is designed both to expose Alaska's future journalists to the best in the reporting profession and to provide America's finest journalists with the opportunity to report in a land rich with untold stories. 

This chair rotates among award-winning journalists. The appointee will teach and lecture in Fairbanks for the 2020 – 2021 academic year (August 9, 2020 - May 8, 2021). This position is a term-funded position through June 30, 2020.

Candidates must be prepared to relocate to Fairbanks, Alaska for the academic year (August 9, 2020 - May 8, 2021).

Applicants must have a record of high level (national and international), sustained and published journalism with outstanding award or other acclaimed work in journalism; the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; public speaking skills; experience in online Journalism recommended. Candidates are evaluated on newsroom experience, awards and other news industry accomplishments and potential for providing high quality instruction to undergraduate students. Expertise and experience relevant to the effective teaching of a specialized Journalism course area.

The Chair is intended for a distinguished Journalist with roots in print. A sustained career in journalism at a high level is required as are expertise and experience relevant to the effective teaching of a specialized Journalism course area.
