2019-2020 Disability Services - Student Assistant B Fairbanks
Disability Services (DS) provides accommodations for academics and campus life to students with disabilities who register with the office. These accommodations range from providing American Sign Language interpreting services to reading tests out loud to approval of emotional support animals for the residence halls. Student assistants are an integral part of the DS team, helping achieve our departmental goals and provide exceptional services to the students we serve. Student Assistants gain invaluable experience through their work with students with disabilities. Working with such a diverse group of the student body teaches student assistants how to look at a situation from a new perspective, and all department employees are empowered to find new ways to improve the services we provide. Tasks required of Student Assistants in DS include scanning text books, converting textbooks into audio books, proctoring exams, document conversion, teaching students how to use assistive technologies, and basic office tasks as needed. Additionally, Student Assistants work directly with a variety of technology and equipment to ensure it is updated and ready to give out to students using it each semester. This includes testing new apps and equipment and providing feedback to ensure the technology and equipment available to students is useful and accessible.
