Stories created by reporters will appear on The Northern Light’s website and social media. You work with other staff on the paper to prepare, develop and repackage content for use in other mediums.

Your role will be to find interesting and newsworthy stories that lend themselves well to written storytelling. You will research, conduct interviews, attend events or games, and collect first hand experiences to be used in their reporting. You will collect photos and/or create graphics to be used with publishing. Stories can appear on The Northern Light website and in the printed edition. You will work with other staff on the paper to prepare, develop and repackage content for use in other mediums. You will be responsible for following The Northern Light editing process, which includes following the Associated Press style. You will be responsible for completing edits, submitting drafts and final projects by deadlines and are expected to attend pitch meetings to discuss stories.

Vivarium Technician

This position will assist the Vivarium Manager to complete day-to-day laboratory operations and provide support for research projects housed in the vivarium. The Vivarium Technician will be responsible for daily husbandry of live research animal colonies, including observation of animal colony health. The technician must be trained in and able to use IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) protocols in accordance with US federal law requirements to ensure the vivarium meets or exceeds federal standards. |

The Northern Light is UAA’s student-run newspaper, funded by student media fees and advertising revenue. The Northern Light explains issues that affect UAA while providing balanced coverage in representing students, staff, faculty and the greater community. It serves as a source of news, information, entertainment and offers a platform for discourse. The paper publishes stories online and in print. Copies of the printed edition of The Northern Light are distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Distribution is about 1,500 copies. Video Reporters and Sports Video Reporters are responsible for creating one 1-3 minute-long video story each week. They collect photos and/or create graphics to be used with publishing. Stories and projects created by the Video Reporters will appear on The Northern Light’s website and social media. They work with other staff on the paper to prepare, develop and repackage content for use in other mediums.
Video Reporters work under the Multimedia Editor. They work with other members of the multimedia team to assist with multimedia projects. Their stories should pertain to UAA and will likely fall into one of the following sections: news, arts and entertainment, features or opinion. They are expected to cover all sections as needed.
Sports Video Reporters work under the Sports Editor. They work with other members of the sports team to assist with sport stories. Because many sporting events happen over the weekend, they are expected to work over the weekend and turn stories around quickly. |
