The Northern Light, Copy Editor

The copy editor is responsible for providing copy edits for The Northern Light. They edit written material for spelling, grammar and clarity and ensure that it follows Associated Press style guidelines.
Also, they are responsible for writing two 500 - 1000 word stories each week. Stories will fall under one of the following sections: news, arts and entertainment, features, or opinion.
The copy editor reviews all projects to ensure that reporters are using unbiased language in reporting except in the case of opinion pieces.
The copy editor must complete all edits by weekly deadlines and is expected to work over the weekend to complete edits. They are expected to help anyone on the paper who needs copy edits and/or training.
The copy editor is under the managing editor. They are expected to attend a weekly pitch meeting with reporters to discuss stories and give feedback on editing. |

The Northern Light is UAA’s student-run newspaper, funded by student media fees and advertising revenue. The Northern Light explains issues that affect UAA while providing balanced coverage in representing students, staff, faculty and the greater community. The Northern Light serves as a source of news, information, entertainment and offers a platform for discourse. The paper publishes stories online and in print. Copies of the printed edition of The Northern Light are distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Distribution is about 1,500 copies. Student Interns are responsible for working together with a team of students, researchers, staff, and faculty that are working to archive records for JBER as part of the military’s updating of their electronic systems database. Student Interns must be able to coordinate multiple documents for analysis on multiple bases from over a decade of records and review them to ensure that they are appropriately cataloged on the military’s website. Learning Assistants (LAs) are UAA students who support, guide, and assist fellow students in high demand courses. LAs are embedded in ‘gateway’ courses that are critical for students to progress in their chosen degree path. Gateway courses require students to demonstrate comprehension of course material so that they are prepared to complete other major requirements. LAs help students in these courses articulate, defend and modify their ideas by facilitating conversations, discussions, and in-class activities.
LAs work closely with their Lead Faculty (the faculty member teaching the course the LA is assigned to) and attend onboarding and training with other LAs. LAs are employees of the Learning Commons which is the home of many free peer learning services including tutoring, coaching, and more.
