Temporary Youth Peer Mentor w/Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP) at UAA
The Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program at UAA is recruiting for Youth Peer Mentors for the Summer Bridge, Acceleration Academy, STEM Career Exploration, and Middle School Academy components.
These components provide students with a living and learning environment that provides an academic college experience. The programs, services and activities we offer are designed to enhance students' educational experiences and provide the framework for active participation as a team member.
Summer Bridge is aimed at recent high school graduates who will be attending the University of Alaska (UA) in the fall. During Summer Bridge students take college level math and science courses preparing them for University level math and science at UA, and also work a professional
internship with one of ANSEP's partner organizations.
Acceleration Academy is targeted at high school freshmen,
sophomores and juniors. The Acceleration Academy provides an opportunity for students to accelerate their academic progress so they are more than ready for college. These students will live on campus for 5 weeks while enrolling in college level math, science or engineering courses. Acceleration Academy students
will also engage in hands on science and engineering activities and projects.
STEM Career Exploration is an opportunity specifically for past Middle School Academy participants. During the STEM sessions students will engage in hands-on STEM projects during a 5-day period. These students will live on campus for the duration of the STEM session.
Middle School Academy recruits students who will be entering 6th, 7th or 8th grades in the fall after the academy. Middle School Academy is a two week, academic, residential academy that emphasizes increasing the students' mathematics and science skills while introducing them to college life and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path.
Student Position - ANSEP Lab Technician/Recitation Leader
Lab Tech/Office Assistants are hired on a per semester basis.
The ANSEP Lab is open to ANSEP students at the following timesduring the Fall and Spring semesters:
Monday Thursday: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday & Sunday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Extended hours during midterms, finals and special ANSEP events.
Lab Tech/Office Assistants are needed to cover shifts during the
above mentioned time periods. During the shifts Lab Tech/Office
Assistants will be responsible for building security; manning lab
tech station; troubleshooting computer/printer problems; cleaning and organizing the computer lab, kitchen, recitation rooms, and storage rooms.
Assist ANSEP staff as needed, performing daily office tasks related to daily operations of ANSEP. Extra Lab Tech/Office Assistants will be hired on an "oncall" basis, to assist ANSEP staff as needed or fill hours left vacant by regularly scheduled lab techs.
Organizes and Leads weekly student study sessions for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) courses. Candidate should be able to clearly explain the principles and information presented in the courses.
In addition, candidate will need to demonstrate leadership to the
students. The number of students will vary weekly so candidate
should be prepared to deal with these fluctuations.
Recitation leaders maintain attendance records and submit them weekly to the ANSEP Student Success Manager.
