Student Support Services is seeking Student Tutors! SSS' tutoring program is unique at UAF. As one of the few places on campus with one-on-one tutoring, tutors provide professional, required, and vital support. Tutors are not expected to teach subject matter, but act as subject area resources on specific areas of student inquiry while modeling and promoting effective study skills and habits. Starting pay is $14.00 per hour.
Student Support Services is a federally-funded TRiO program that serves 280 limited income, first-generation, and disabled college students. The program's mission is to assist students toward the goal of graduating with a bachelor's degree.
This position reports directly to the SSS staff and will tutor/mentor students by assisting them with basic instruction, study skills, and subject-specific content, by contacting SSS students via phone or email, by assisting at workshops and study groups, and by assisting with office duties and projects.
This position will provide tutoring in college math, science, business, computers, English, and/or other CORE courses for Student Support Services participants. Courses most requested are DEVM 054, 055, 065, 105; MATH 113, 114, 151, 152, 156, 251, 252, 253, 302; PHYS 103, 104, 211, 212; CHEM 103, 105, 106; BIOL 111, 112, 115, 116; ES 201, 208, 209, 210, 346; STAT 200; ACCT 261, 262; ECON 200, 201, 202; WRTG 111, 211, 213, 214.
Must have the ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision with students of varying abilities. Good oral communication skills required. Interest in working with a diverse group of students. Good computer skills are required. Must have a cumulative and current GPA of 3.0 and a "B" grade or higher in all courses the applicant wishes to tutor. Must have the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform the responsibilities of this position. Strong base knowledge in the content area. Strong interpersonal skills.
The SSS program maintains a staff of 8-10 tutors.
Must be a UA student enrolled with a minimum of 6 credits.
Starting pay for this position is $14.00 per hour.
