The Student Wellness Leader at Mat-Su College plays an integral role in accomplishing the goals of the Journey Program team. The Journey Program puts on multiple health and wellness activities each semester and promotes the availability of behavioral health counseling on campus. The program is designed to support students’ academic life by encouraging healthy choices and exposing students to ways to improve stress management, personal safety, awareness of good mental health, connection to other people, and balance between academics, work, family, and self-care.

Mat-Su College is a community campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage. The campus is located on 951 acres in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, the fastest growing region of Alaska. We serve as a major higher education hub for the communities of Wasilla and Palmer. Special Instructions for Applicants:
The ideal candidate for this position is available to work a few hours a day (10 – 15 hours a week) with some occasional evening availability. This position is located in Student Services and reports to the Director of Student Services. This is a full academic year position that begins no later than August 12, 2019.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Excellent written communication skills. This position will send multiple emails each week to coordinate between presenters and the Journey Program team. Several times each semester, this position composes an email sent to all students promoting upcoming events.
Ability to prioritize tasks, follow through without prompting, and stay organized. This position requires excellent time management skills, a good memory, and an eye for details. Maintaining tracking sheets and keeping well-organized files is imperative.
Genuine interest in health and wellness for self and others. Knowledge of health and wellness concerns of college-going students of various ages. The Student Wellness Leader contributes materially to the Journey Program and uses creativity and insight to encourage participation.
Exceptional interpersonal skills. The Student Wellness Leader must be able to ask others for help when needed, respond reliably to requests, and adapt to changing circumstances. Must have good self-management skills and be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Minimum of one year paid or volunteer experience requiring team work and demonstrating reliability and good work ethic. Please include your current or prior supervisors in your list of references.
Experience using Microsoft office application such as Word and PowerPoint. Must be able to produce an attractive flier from scratch and from a template. Ability to learn more advanced computer skills or new programs quickly.
Typical Education or Training
Must be enrolled in the UA system in a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment.
Must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average and maintain good standing.
Completion of 200 level Writing General Education Requirement preferred.
Consideration will be given to Human Services majors completing practicums for the AAS degree.
Consideration will be given to student enrolled in health and health-related majors such as psychology, pre-nursing, pre-health, etc.
Consideration will be given to students who will be enrolled in Mat-Su College courses for the majority of their courses.
Consideration will be given to students who are work-study eligible.

Special Conditions of Employment:
Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
