Position Summary:

This is a union represented position under the direct supervision of the Shift Supervisor. The employee will perform duties at the Atkinson Heat & Power Plant in support of Plant Operations. This is an entry level position intended to provide on-the-job training and establish the knowledge base for promotion to a higher level within the Power Plant.

Duties:

100L6070 CT1 Classification Duties: The following are representative of the duties that are performed by persons in the Crafts and Trades I category. More specific duties may be detailed in departmental job descriptions. Persons in this category, with requisite skills and abilities, may at times be required to perform other duties and responsibilities including those mentioned in other classification descriptions and marginal responsibilities shared by any other classification as assigned by management. A. Inspects and performs various maintenance, repair, and construction tasks for compliance with applicable work orders, regulations, codes, and professional practices. B. Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs all types of maintenance functions using a variety of test equipment, e.g. volt/ohm meter. C. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on building components, and specialized equipment. D. Demonstrates appropriate work methods to other employees including proper safety measures. E. Obtains needed information or decisions from supervisor as needed. F. Performs extensive overhaul, maintenance, and repair to equipment such as, boilers, steam plants, ventilation systems, auxiliary power units, fuel systems, hydronic systems, , and other equipment as needed. G. Ensures that hazards are removed from buildings and grounds including snow, ice, debris, construction materials, and other items as required. JOB Duties: Works in areas that contain asbestos. *Assist the Boiler Firer in taking hourly readings, testing water, greasing equipment and pulling ash. *Assists the Maintenance personnel in installing new pipes, valves, ductwork, replacing brick in ash bin, repairing leaks in pipes and assist in utilidor maintenance. *Operates and repairs pumps, water systems, and other boiler room equipment including but not limited to firing boilers under supervision and assists in maintaining proper pressure and water levels. *Assist in boiler and turbine overhauls. *Operate the coal or ash handling equipment. *Performs preventative maintenance on various equipment including heating equipment. *Maintains records of repair and maintenance of work performed. *Unload and store supplies and equipment. *Assists in maintaining the building and equipment; remove hazards from buildings and ground including snow, ice, debris, construction materials and other items as required. *Perform housekeeping duties in the workplace to include, but not limited to mopping, waxing, dusting, painting, etc. *Perform related tests and tasks as assigned. Receive continuous on-the-job training in the Boiler Firer duties. Adheres to all safety practices.Essential

Preferred: Process Technology, AAS. Demonstrated previous experience working various shifts (e.g., rotating shifts, night shifts)

Required: Valid Driver’s License and High School Diploma or GED. Required to obtain third class Boiler Operator's license within 6 months of employment.

WORK HOURS: 12hr Shifts , days or nights (unless otherwise informed)  

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Must demonstrate custodial experience. Must demonstrate knowledge and experience with building equipment and maintenance. Knowledge of tools and equipment used in Power Plants. Must demonstrate knowledge and experience with overhauls, for example, turbines, compressors and pumps. Ability to wear various respiratory protection apparatus. Must possess mechanical aptitude. Ability and willingness to work rotating shifts and overtime as required. Ability and willingness to follow instructions. Ability and willingness to learn and work within a team environment and be dependable. WORK HOURS: 12hr Shifts , days or nights (unless otherwise informed)

 Required Experience:  This is an entry level position intended to provide on-the-job training and establish the knowledge base for promotion to a higher level within the Power Plant. The successful candidate will have some demonstrated experience with industrial tools and equipment; including experience with turbines, compressors and pumps, or an equivalent combination of education and training in lieu of hands on experience (e.g., Process Technology Associate of Applied Science).   

Typical Education or Training:  Ability to obtain Third Class Boiler Operator's License within six months of employment. Able to complete the GPI Learning program given by the Power Plant within six months of employment. State of Alaska Driver's License. High School graduate or equivalent.                                       

This is a University of Alaska Local 6070 union represented position.  Current University of Alaska Local 6070 employees will be provided priority employment considerations for the first 5 days, when they meet the minimum qualifications for the posted position.  Current University of Alaska Local 6070 employees who meet the minimum qualifications for the posting should apply before the review date. However, there is no requirement to be a Bargaining Member in order to apply.

Salary Information:   CT1/Step 7  $22.34/hr. (See Article 9.2 in the L6070 Collective Bargaining Agreement, Wage Grade Schedule - http://www.alaska.edu/labor/local-6070/ .   This is a full-time, benefited position. Union represented.

L6070- At-will:  Pursuant to Article 1.7 of the Local 6070 Collective Bargaining Agreement, upon initial hire Local 6070 Bargaining Unit Members are probationary for the first six (6) months of work.  During the probationary period, employment may be terminated for no reason or any reason.
