The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is hiring an Anchorage Business Advisor. This advisor position is a vital part of the fast paced Anchorage Center; the largest center in the statewide network. The business advisor must constantly assess client needs during one-on-one business advising sessions and make decisions regarding appropriate required actions to assist the client. Assistance is multifaceted; it will involve many aspects of business formation or on-going business development as well as personal aspects of client personality, emotion, family, financial, and maturity implications and interactions. Advisor must address the needs professionally and confidentially to best assist client's business development needs through direct assistance or referral to appropriate reference source or program.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Substantive knowledge of business management principles, practices and techniques; strong financial planning skills; program development and management skills, employee management skills, communication skills, strong organizational abilities; resource development skills; several years of business ownership and/or management. Proficiency and experience in public speaking, developing and delivering classroom instruction, and relationship building with other organizations. Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures relevant to federal and university agreements. Ability to focus and maintain strict regulations of database session updates/uploads.Ability to capture significant return on investment results and create comprehensive reports for purposes of grant proposals or quarterly reporting requirements. Strong analytical skills to best identify and develop plan for business development with client. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to organize and present facts and opinions. Occasional travel is required. Attendance of meetings that fall outside of the 8-5, M-F hours of operation are frequently required. Computer operating skills required; Google Suite and Microsoft Office products. Cloud technology and Google Drive experience preferred.
Five years of business ownership or at least five years small business management (financial and personnel) experience is required. Ownership or management experience must include executive level responsibility for usual and necessary small business operational functions. Business development and financial accounting knowledge critical. Business consulting/mentoring experience.
Ability to develop materials and provide workshops before large groups. Occasional travel is required. Attendance of meetings that fall outside of the 8-5, M-F hours of operation are frequently required.
Areas of experience preferred:
Experience with business development in rural areas. Experience working and/or operating a business in rural Alaska. Experience with banking/finance industry. Experience in international trade. Knowledge of federal, state and local financial and tax regulations relevant to small business. Familiarity with the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the products and services they provide.
Bachelor's degree in business or related field preferred. MBA or other Master's in a relevant field preferred.
