The candidate(s) selected to work in this department may be required to work some evenings. The student work schedule will be determined based on the needs of The Learning Resource Center and the student's class schedule. Work schedule will be discussed at the time of the interview. Math tutors are available during scheduled hours for students enrolled in MSC. Tutors are available on a walk-in basis only.

Required knowledge, skills, & abilities:
Mastery in pre-algebra as well as in beginning, intermediate, and college algebra.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work with students from diverse populations.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to work independently.
Willingness to contribute to a team.
Required education and/or training (including licenses):
Peer Tutor candidates must have completed Calculus I with a grade of B or above.
Peer Tutor candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. (If candidate has less than 12 college credit hours, high school GPA must be 3.5.)
Peer Tutor candidates must be able to clearly communicate math concepts (especially beginning, intermediate, and college algebra) to students at various learning levels.
Other special skills/knowledge needed:
Peer Tutors must be able to attend scheduled training sessions.
Preferred knowledge, skills, or abilities:
Experience tutoring or working as a teaching assistant.
Enrollment in a BA/BS program in the University of Alaska system.
Knowledge of resources that assist students in learning math and promoting independent learning.

As part of the hiring process for math peer tutors, interviewed applicants will be required to participate in an observed mock tutoring session.
Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load).
