Position Summary:

Writing Consultants work closely with students, faculty, and administrators to help students become capable, successful writers. While most work is one-on-one with a student, Consultants will occasionally need to deliver presentations, lead or support workshops, or participate in group-learning programs. Consultants are expected to attend regular training sessions to improve their support skills.

Duties:

The mission of the Learning Commons Writing Center (WC) is to promote the use of academic writing in all disciplines and at all levels as a tool for learning, communicating, self-expression, and critical thinking. WC consultations complement course-based learning and help contribute to student success. Consultants will be paid as level C student employees ($10.50/hour) for up to 20 hours per week, depending on need and availability.

Job Duties

  • Attend all meetings and participate in Writing Center orientation and trainings.
  • Follow all procedures and policies set by the Learning Commons and Writing Center.
  • Provide individualized consultation with students in all disciplines, at all levels, and at all stages of the writing process. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Consulting with students regarding global writing aspects such as thesis, evidence development, flow, logic, and effective argument.
    • Tutoring students in pre-writing strategies including interpreting, understanding, generating, organizing, and elaborating ideas.
    • Tutoring students in specific English areas, primarily in grammar, mechanics, and sentence structure, by effectively communicating the principles and techniques of the subject area.
    • Consulting with students regarding English language skills development.
  • Work with students to improve their writing skills while helping them understand professor expectations.
  • Maintain a professional and welcoming Writing Center environment.
  • Other duties as assigned

The Writing Center has two locations: SMH115, and Library room 110. They are staffed from Monday to Thursday, 9am to 9pm, and Friday through Sunday, Noon to 5pm (Please see the main website for current details). Hours vary during summer and intersessions. Hours are subject to change.

Expectations

  • Arrive on time to all scheduled sessions, prepared to act in a profession manner that is sensitive and respectful of student needs.
  • Seek coverage for any necessary absences, and notify the appropriate authorities in a timely manner of any schedule conflicts.
  • Keep all information on students you work with confidential.
  • Support and care about student success.

 

Qualifications

  • Ability to work assigned hours, possibly including some evenings or weekends.
  • Minimum of cumulative GPA of 2.0 with a 3.0 average in English coursework.
  • Must have successfully completed English 211, 212, 213, 214 or an equivalent English composition course.
  • Prior tutoring experience preferred, but not required.
  • Must be able to work with diverse population. ELL education experience preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Familiarity with word processing applications, particularly MS Word or Google Docs.
