University of Alaska INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY --The Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center (ACRC) at UAS is the lead or a partner on several ecosystem ecology projects in southeast Alaska, coastal British Columbia, and Washington and Oregon. These projects range from yellow-cedar decline ecology and ice-field-to-ocean linkages to carbon stock assessments and stream water chemistry studies. We are seeking an individual to assist with data collection and management; spatial data manipulation and analysis; and lab management for enhanced student learning opportunities. This is a one-year term Research Technician position serving in a support role for a wide range of research projects focused on ecosystem ecology and services in the Pacific Coastal Temperate Rainforest region, as well as for faculty laboratory teaching support. 10% Field and laboratory assistance; duties as assigned. Non-Essential
20% Conduct basic GIS data analysis and remote sensing data manipulation in support of various spatial analysis projects, including yellow-cedar ecology, landslide dynamics, icefield-to-estuary studies, and permafrost change. Essential
30% Data entry, management, and QA/QC for various projects, including alpine monitoring, icefield-to-estuary studies, carbon stock and flux projects, and primary succession ecology. Essential
40% Academic Departmental Support:
- purchase and maintain lab supplies for GEOL, ENVS, GEOG and PHYS courses
- prep and test lab instrumentation
- help with lab set up and facilitation for PHYS, ENVS, GEOG, and GEOL labs
- maintain student database and list serv for ENVS and GEOG students
- help supervise undergraduate research assistants in the field and lab Essential
Education & Experience
Current University of Alaska researcher in a relevant ACRC field of study is required. This is an internal recruitment.
Two years of college coursework research in a relevant field is required.
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Ecology) is preferred.
One year of experience in environmental research, GIS analysis, data management, or field support is preferred.
Experience working with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds is preferred.
Knowledge of coastal temperate rainforest ecosystems
Experience manipulating spatial data and processing remote-sensed imagery using ArcGIS, R, eCognition or other software or programming languages
Experience collecting and managing large data sets using Excel, Access, R, Oracle or other programs
Experience using and analyzing LiDAR data
Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple projects
