The School of Education (SOE), in the College of Natural Sciences and Math (CNSM) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), seeks exceptional candidates for two Assistant or Associate Bi-Partite professor positions in its innovative elementary teacher education programs. The UAF School of Education is accredited by the national Council for Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP).
10% Service duties to include:
-Provide a wide range of services at the department, school, college and university level. This includes serving on committees, working on accreditation and continuous assessment, tasks related to admission of applicants to the internship year and on-going elementary department professional development. 10% Supervision duties to include:
-Provide in-school supervision to student teaching interns in Fairbanks and/or in other Alaska locations.
-Assist with locating placements in Fairbanks schools for BAE students completing practicum requirements for education foundation coursework prior to the internship year Essential
80% Teaching duties to include:
-Teach elementary education courses that are required for the diverse population of students in the BA in Elementary (BAE) degree and in the Post-Baccalaureate License/Certificate program.
-Teach education courses in both face-to-face settings and by distance delivery using synchronous technology strategies.
-Teach education courses at the lower and upper divisions and some at the graduate level. Required courses include education foundation courses (e.g., Introduction to Education, Children’s Literature, Assessment of Learning, Teaching with Technology, Media Literacy) and methods courses which are offered in all of the major subject areas during the senior/internship year.
-Develop coursework that is relevant and place-based and demonstrates respect for the unique and highly diverse cross-cultural Alaska context.
-Work in close collaboration with a team of elementary faculty and advisors (courses, curriculum, fieldwork, assignments and evaluation in elementary programs are all tightly integrated)
-Serve on M.Ed. graduate committees Essential
The successful candidates will: teach elementary education foundation and methods courses in Fairbanks and by distance; supervise elementary student teaching interns in Fairbanks and/or in other locations in Alaska; serve on M.Ed. graduate committees; and provide service for the Elementary Department, SOE, CNSM and UAF (e.g. service related to accreditation, assessment, admission).
The Elementary Department provides a BA in Elementary Education degree and an Elementary Post-Baccalaureate graduate-level licensure program to students in face-to-face settings on the Fairbanks Campus and to students in locations throughout Alaska with interactive synchronous distance coursework and on-site supervisor visits. The Department focuses on providing relevant, meaningful, place-based coursework and fieldwork in the unique and highly diverse cross-cultural Alaska context, and emphasizes core practices in teaching as the foundation of the preparation process.
Close collaboration among the team of elementary faculty and academic advisors is required to support the tight alignment among required readings, assignments, assessments, and fieldwork experiences in all required education courses. The successful elementary teacher education programs at UAF provide excellent professional opportunities for applicants who are motivated by a desire to contribute to meeting the special challenges of working in the Alaska K-12 and teacher education environment.
Experience as an elementary classroom teacher in recent years
Experience working with adults in a teaching/learning situation (e.g., teaching at a university level, mentoring a student teacher/intern, providing in-service workshops for teachers)
Participation in professional development in recent years
Experience working with students from diverse groups: non-traditional college students; ELL students; low-income students; students with special needs
Knowledge of the Alaska context
Knowledge of Alaska Native people and communities
Experience working with Indigenous populations in schools
Strong interpersonal skills
Strong written and oral communication skills
Willingness to work collaboratively with a team of elementary faculty and advisors
Experience and expertise with Google Applications and with distance learning platforms
Master of Education degree or similar degree in relevant field
Three years of K-8 teaching experience in the last ten years
Holds a current teaching license
Experience working with adult learners
Evidence of continued professional development
Direct experience in Alaskan schools or direct experience with Indigenous populations in K-12 schools
