Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Fairbanks HVAC Shop seeks applicants for the position of Preventative Maintenance Technician to perform PM work in order to keep mechanical equipment in peak operating condition. Typical work will include changing air filters, greasing motors, cleaning mechanical equipment, and performing visual checks on a variety of mechanical equipment. Typical work schedule will be M-F 8:00am – 4:30pm. Successful applicant will demonstrate at least one year in a field related to this position (building or equipment maintenance), and be a high school graduate or equivalent.


100L6070 Classification Duties: Maintains ventilation equipment, electric generators, agricultural equipment, and fuel systems by making routine repairs and minor adjustments. Visually inspects and listens to machines and equipment to locate causes of malfunctions. Dismantles machines and equipment and installs new or repaired parts. Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, and repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related equipment. Operates and repairs pumps, water systems, and other boiler room equipment at locations other than UAF Power Plant, including but not limited to firing boilers under supervision and assisting in maintaining proper pressure and water levels. Assembles, overhauls, and rebuilds small engines, motors, pumps, generators, agricultural equipment and related equipment. Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs various types of mechanical, electrical, and agricultural vehicles and related equipment. Performs preventative maintenance on various equipment including heating and cooling systems, vehicles, and agricultural equipment, at this skill level. Operates construction and road maintenance equipment in excess of 100 horsepower or vehicles in excess of 33000 GVWR for less than 50% of assigned duties. Maintains records of repair and overhaul work performed; maintains parts and supply records; orders needed parts and supplies. Removes hazards from buildings and grounds including snow, ice, debris, animal wastes, construction materials, and other items as required. Performs certain practices of animal husbandry including health maintenance and treatment; calving; artificial insemination; inoculations; milking; monitoring feeding; and collection and analysis of samples. Stocks shelves, racks and bins, maintains inventories and issues materials. Identifies compatible substitute maintenance and operational repair and replacement parts. Receives materials. Delivers and picks up hazardous materials. Job Position Duties: •The Preventative Maintenance Technician performs and documents preventative maintenance in all UAF facilities with major emphasis on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration equipment, boilers, and glycol chemistry using the AIM Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). • The Preventative Maintenance Technician will perform semi-skilled maintenance tasks as well as some equipment testing and cleaning, and will work directly with a team of technicians that performs skilled maintenance and repairs. • Typical work will include changing air filters, greasing motors, cleaning heating and cooling coils, replacing belts, and performing visual inspections on a variety of equipment. • Preventative maintenance tasks are performed indoors or outdoors in all weather conditions, and employees may be required to crawl, climb, sit, and stand for long periods of time. • This position requires working under various lighting conditions. Noise levels may be high when operating various types of equipment. • Preventative maintenance technicians may be exposed to high voltage electricity, confined spaces, heights, chemicals, and some asbestos containing material. • All appropriate training and personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided.Essential

**The University of Alaska Fairbanks HVAC Shop seeks applicant for the position of Preventative Maintenance (PM) Technician.  PM techs perform various maintenance and cleaning duties in UAF owned facilities, to keep mechanical equipment in peak operating condition.  Successful applicants will have one or more years of experience in building or equipment maintenance and a basic understanding of building mechanical systems.

**Willing to obtain Operation and Maintenance asbestos training and participate in a respirator program.  Maintaining the State of Alaska Certificate of Fitness is a condition of employment, maintenance of such license is at the employer’s expense.  Willing to remove asbestos under Operations and Maintenance protocol.

Knowledge /Skills/Abilities:  Ability to interact and communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and customers. *Ability to work safely and to ensure the safety of others. *Ability to prioritize and consistently complete assigned work in a reasonable amount of time. *Effective problem solving skills and attention to detail. *General knowledge of building mechanical systems in a commercial environment.  *General knowledge of equipment operation and repair and the ability to use hand and power tools. *Ability to keep accurate maintenance records for various pieces of equipment.

Required Experience: Successful applicant will demonstrate at least one year in a field related to this position (building or equipment maintenance).

Education/Training: High School graduate or equivalent. *Valid Alaska Driver’s License with clean driving record.

Salary Information:   MSW4/Step 7 $19.85/hr. (See Article 9.2 in the L6070 Collective Bargaining Agreement, Wage Grade Schedule - .   This is a full-time, benefited position. Union represented.
