Position Summary:

The University of Alaska Southeast, Sitka Campus, is accepting applications for an 11-month/year, full-time Custodian/Maintenance Service Worker (MSW2). Clean and protect university facilities, grounds and surrounding areas by performing custodial maintenance duties including dusting, mopping, finishing and buffing floors, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, cleaning/sanitizing and restocking restrooms, grounds keeping and removing snow, ice and debris. Some responsibilities are required to be performed outside of normal business hours. This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and Alaska Higher Education Crafts & Trades Employees Local 6070. Duties:

30GROUND/FACILITY: • Lock and unlock assigned areas, secure building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows. • Keep grounds and surrounding areas in clean and orderly condition including but not limited to trash removal, mowing, weeding, and raking lawns, and snow removal as directed. • Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc. • Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis. • Perform other related duties as assigned.Essential
30MAINTENANCE: • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies. Promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Attend safety meetings and participate in required health and safety trainings. • Safely operate and maintain all vehicles and other job related equipment. • Attend to emergencies when necessary. Report discovered hazards or deficiencies and secure the site for safety. Post signs to advise others of safety hazards. • May be required to work extra hours or be called back in to unscheduled work for special needs.Essential
40CUSTODIAL: • Dust, mop, buff floors. Vacuum and shampoo carpets. • Clean and sanitize restrooms and restock paper and soap supplies. • Dust, wipe, clean furniture, walls, horizontal surfaces, and windows. • Perform routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies. Launder cleaning rags and dust mops. • Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed. • Empty trash receptacles and bag trash for proper disposal. Handle recycling materials.Essential

Salary Information

$15.68 per hour.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to understand verbal instructions.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow safety, operating and maintenance instructions.
  • Ability to operate vacuums and other related equipment.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to write basic correspondence including using email.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff and general public in a positive manner.
  • Physical Demands: may frequently be required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and occasionally exposure to unpleasant smells and odors.

  • May frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, night vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Required Experience

1-2 years custodial experience; minimum 1 year grounds keeping experience; and knowledge of facilities support.

Education or Training Required

Prior relevant on-the-job training; unrestricted Alaska Driver's License is required.
