Position Summary:

The UAF Department of Military and Veteran Services is looking to hire a VA Education Benefits Advisor to assist military affiliated students in navigating the process of using VA educational benefits and certify these benefits to the VA. The ideal person will proactively engage students who are military service members, veterans, and their spouses and dependents to ensure a high quality undergraduate student experience that supports retention and graduation. This person plays an integral role in supporting the success of student veterans and other military-affiliated students at UAF.

Duties:

20Schedule and conduct trainings to UAF faculty and staff regarding VA Education Benefits Assist with the completion of Military Friendly Surveys Schedule and conduct workshops at UAF, CTC and in the community on how to utilize the GI Bill Create and maintain fliers, brochures and handouts for GI Bill tips for students and faculty Assist with responses to legislatures and media as neededEssential
30Perform end of the semester audit of academic transcripts to determine if VA recipients are fulfilling their degree requirements. Provide required documentation necessary for annual audit to State and Federal agencies. Run bi-weekly report of student withdrawals and report adjustments to the VA. Verify correct payments with Office of the Bursar 3rd Party Billing, make adjustments or contact VA as needed Run Non-Passing Grade Report and process adjustments in VAOnce Run list of students on Academic Probation and Academically Disqualified and report as required to the VA Run list of students who graduate and report as required to the VA Submit new programs and yearly catalog to the state and federal VA Offices Report UAF policies not consistent with VA regulations to Director and provide support data as neededEssential
45Provide information regarding establishment and use of veteran benefits and assist with completion of required forms. Prepare correspondence to incoming students regarding VA Benefit Program guidelines. Determine if placement test scores for math and english meet criteria for VA funding of remedial coursework. Maintain inventory of VA forms. Regularly review UAF VA webpage and catalog for accuracy. Determine if VA educational benefits are distributed in accordance with Federal Educational Regulations. Act as the liaison as well as troubleshoot between UAF and the VA Regional Office for students utilizing VA Education Benefits. Serve as initial point of contact with Vocational Rehabilitation Office and provide end-of-semester grade reports for their benefit recipients. Serve as point of contact for active duty as well as veteran students. Perform degree audits on students to determine eligibility of courses under UAF catalog as well as VA educational benefit programs. Advise students as to which classes are needed to fulfill degree requirements and/or which classes will be eligible for certification under the VA Educational Programs. Provide periodic analysis of data to supervisor in an effort to improve quality assurance standards. Communicate with other departments and agencies to coordinate as necessary.Essential

As a school certifying official for federal and state veteran benefits, the incumbent is responsible for timely and accurate certification of veteran education benefits in compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and policy. The VA Educational Benefits Advisor position also supports student success through advising, advocacy, and programming for veterans and military-affiliated students. The position is housed in the Department of Military and Veteran Services, works alongside another VA Educational Benefits Advisor and the Director of Military and Veteran Services.  The mission of the Department of Military and Veteran Services is to provide information and services to enhance student success while providing comprehensive support to military-affiliated students in an atmosphere of respect for their service to the nation.  We are committed to the highest standard of service for our students, colleagues, visitors and other customers. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of data entry procedures, business office procedures and practices, record keeping, basic accounting and filing systems. Skill in operating office machines, including a personal computer, typing accurately at a moderate speed, and accurate recordkeeping and filing. Ability to enter data accurately in a computer system, work cooperatively with others, work well under pressure of meeting deadlines, and maintain confidentiality. Must possess analytical and problem solving skills. In depth knowledge Finance and Student. Knowledge of automated accounting systems and electronic spreadsheets. Ability to use Microsoft Office or comparable word processing software. Ability to relate well with a diverse group of constituents including faculty, staff and students as well as the general public. Ability to act quickly and precisely while remaining calm and composed under pressure. Knowledge of university policies, procedures and regulations, especially those relating to HR, payroll, purchasing, employee and student rights. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, follow directions and handle confidential information in a professional manner. Must have strong attention to detail. Knowledge of VA Educational Programs and benefit eligibility.

Required Experience:

1 year experience in student advising and 1 year experience in customer service.

Bachelor Degree required
