Position Summary:

The Institute of Arctic Biology is seeks a knowledgeable and motivated manager for a research and teaching greenhouse located on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. Minimum requirements: BS in biology-related field and research experience; graduate degree and greenhouse experience preferred.

Duties:

10Interact with PIs, instructors, and student to improve the products of greenhouse use - Advise and assist faculty and students regarding plant culture, plant nutrition, experimental design, materials and methods. Assist students designing greenhouse projects, maintain and monitor plant experiments. Maintain records of methods pertaining to plant culture used in greenhouse projects and their outcome. Manage facility space allocation for research and teaching projects.Essential
10Supervise employees and provide outreach - Supervise, hire, and train up to 2 student employees. Develop written protocols for plant maintenance to assist in training employees. Coordinate and conduct tours of the greenhouse, and participate in appropriate outreach activities.Essential
25Maintain the physical integrity of the greenhouse and ensure proper function of environmental controls - Monitor major building maintenance issues and submit work orders for building maintenance and repairs. Coordinate with facilities service personnel for work to be done in a way that minimizes negative impacts to ongoing projects. Configure and program software and monitor computerized environmental control systems for changing conditions in both greenhouse and growth chambers. Provide, coordinate, and supervise greenhouse maintenance as needed. On call 24 hours/day, 7 days/week to solve problems with the environmental control systems. Conduct repairs of environmental control hardware by diagnosing problems and replacing defective computer hardware components. Requires a level of experience or lack of apprehension working with electrical components. Maintain inventory and purchase spare replacement hardware components and other equipment to repair greenhouse equipment.Essential
55Care for plant collections - Provide daily plant care for research and teaching plant collections in consultation with research PIs and UAF instructors. Coordinate propagation, fertilization, harvesting and data collection. Acquire plant material and supplies to support biology classes. Update plant collections as requested by faculty and maintain records. Monitor all plants in facility for insects and disease. Identify pests and provide appropriate control measures. Maintain records of pesticide use and operate in compliance with Environmental Protection Agency and Worker Protection Standards. Maintain records and inventory of hazardous chemicals.Essential

This position is 3/4 time 60 hours a pay period. Can potentially increase to full time in the future if funding is available.

 Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

     1. Knowledge of plant and soil biology relevant to the effective plant culture, nutrition, propagation, and pest                           management, and treatment of disease.

     2. Strong analytical and problem solving skills, necessary to direct, maintain, and troubleshoot the complex system of             software and hardware that governs environmental control of greenhouse and environmental chambers.

     3. Excellent organizational skills, required to coordinate space among multiple users over time, juggle diverse and                   sometimes conflicting needs of users in limited space, and schedule the activities of multiple employees.

     4. Strong sense of commitment and responsibility to successfully work independently.

     5. Ability to interact positively with faculty, staff, students, and the public.

     6. Knowledge of computer software programs for word processing, spreadsheet, and statistical analysis.

     7. Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.

     8. Knowledge of applicable UA policies and regulations.

     9. Ability to work with plants which may cause allergic reactions.

     10. Ability to lift 50 lbs. and maneuver between tables spaced 18 inches apart.

Required Experience:

     BS in relevant field or equivalent work experience.

     Experience with, and interest in, plant propagation and culture.

     PREFERRED: Masters in the biological sciences. Research experience resulting in publication of results. Two or more           years of practical experience in a research or commercial greenhouse. Extensive knowledge of plant culture and                 experimental design. Experience teaching students at the college level.

Typical Education or Training:

     BS in the biological sciences or relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and training. Pesticide                     Applicator's Certification (which can be obtained after the date of hire).
