Position Summary:

This position supervises the provision of health care and maintenance for a variety of laboratory vertebrate animals, UAA's vivarium in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guidelines for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, UAA Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) policies, and Alaska Department of Fish and Game policies. The facility is required to pass annual inspections by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and biannual inspections by UAA IACUC. In addition, this position provides assistance to the Vivarium Veterinarian. The incumbent also supervises the construction and fabrication of cages and other animal related structures and the repair and maintenance of equipment used in support of research activities.

Duties:

10Ensure all vivarium users follow University policy, IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) protocols, and state and federal regulations.Essential
10In concert with the Vivarium Users and Managers Committee (VUMC), review proposals submitted by potential users requesting reallotments or new allotments for vivarium space. Make recommendations for approval or denial to the Vice Provost of Research and Graduate Studies (VPRGS) and VUMC. Coordinate reservation and use of vivarium''s common space. In concert with the VUMC, provide recommendations to the VPRGS for resolving conflicts involving common use and dedicated space.Essential
15Provide training to vivarium staff and users involved in animal care, handling and observation.Essential
20Supervise and perform the routine operations, maintenance and repair of cages, feeders and limited facility modifications for animal research projects as required.Essential
3Update and maintain Vivarium Quality Management System.Essential
30Supervise the maintenance and health care of a variety of wild and domestic vertebrate laboratory animals used for research and breeding purposes.Essential
4Manage vivarium budget and ensure Vivarium fee structure is reviewed annually. Recommend fee structure changes as needed to the VUMC and VPRGS.Essential
8Ex officio member to UAA''s IACUC and VUMC, including duties or assignments associated with those committees. Remain current in animal welfare issues by participation in professional development activities.Essential

Required Experience:

Three years experience working with animals in a research, university or veterinary setting with exposure to requirements of different species.

Typical Education or Training:

BA/BS plus 2 yrs experience OR AA/AS with 3 yrs experience. Degree in a field relevant to this position. The experience must be in animal husbandry or working with animals in a research or laboratory setting.
