Provides for campus beautification and safety by; production, care and planting of annual and perennial flowers, interior plant care, snow removal, ice control, and a full range of other landscaping maintenance tasks. Installs and maintains landscapes , identifies and eradicates pests as necessary. Operates tools and equipment including trucks, tractors, loaders and other tools. Assists in the training and supervision of temporary workers. Year-round exposure to varying weather conditions is to be expected. Heavy lifting occasionally required. Hours and/or days of scheduled work may change depending on needs of department.
Landscape maintenance and installation - Maintains and installs tree, shrubs, annual and perennial flowers, turf grasses and water features by proper application of horticulture and arboriculture techniques. Representative of duties are: planning, seeding, cultivating, transplanting, planting, removal, staking, edging, mulching, fertilization, liming, raking, irrigation, weed control, brush clearing, clean up, trash pickup and other services common to the industry. During spring clean-up, sweeping and power washing may warrant irregular hours required for the operation. Snow removal/ice-control - Performs snow removal and ice control by proper application of snow removal and ice control techniques including but not limited to; operation of heavy and medium duty equipment including; loaders, bobcats, and sanders, by operation of light duty equipment including, loaders, pickups, sanders and tractors, by manual labor including shoveling, sweeping, ice chipping and application of ice melting compounds. During winter, frequent irregular hours required for snow removal and ice control. Miscellaneous - Performs housekeeping work including but not limited to; emptying trash cans, moving outdoor furniture, setting flags, cleaning equipment and shop area. Place orders for parts and supplies as needed, and make purchases in accordance with established practice. Must be dependable, cooperative and able to work independently as well as interact positively with a diverse group of people, providing assistance even when under pressure.
Must have knowledge of basic horticultural principles. Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience in a commercial setting in all types of landscape maintenance including but not limited to; Mowing, irrigation, ornamental tree and shrub care, greenhouse operations and procedures, interior landscaping, basic pest identification and eradication, and snow removal. Experience in equipment usage should include; trucks, tractors, loaders, lawn mowers, string trimmers and tools common to the trade. Good communication skills and ability to work effectively with diverse group of people are required. May instruct and train laborers in the performance of planting, transplanting, pruning, fertilization, watering, mowing, cleaning and other duties necessary to accomplish these and similar tasks. Ability to walk, lift, reach, stoop and work with fingers for an eight hour shift.
Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess or obtain a class "B" commercial drivers license with air breaks and tanker endorsements within six months of hire. Must obtain Alaska DEC commercial pesticide license "category 4" within six months of hire.
